Microscopy of Tissues

ANP 241
4 Tissue Types

• 1. Epithelia
• 2. Connective
• 3. Muscle
• 4. Nervous
4 Types of Tissues

• 1. Epithelia
– Made up of one or more layers of cells
– Lowermost layer attached to basement membrane
• Glue-like layer connects epithelia to underlying connective
tissue
– Cells are closely packed, little space between them
– Always has a “free edge”

• Connective
– Contains relatively few cells/unit volume
– Cells dispersed in non-living intercellular matrix
– Cells secrete material into matrix
– Characteristic of matrix determines physical property of
connective tissue

• 3. Muscle
– Has ability to contract
– 3 types
• Cardiac
• Skeletal
• Smooth

• 4. Nervous Tissue
– Responsible for coordinating and controlling many
bodily activities
– Consists of neurons and support cells
– Neurons are able to conduct action potentials (electrical
activity)
