Volunteer Airport Ambassador (VAA) Fact Sheet

 The Volunteer Airport Ambassador program at San Diego International Airport is

one of the largest airport programs of its kind.

 The VAA program is comprised of retired doctors, lawyers, schoolteachers,

military persons as well as persons currently engaged in fulltime employment
elsewhere in San Diego. Many VAA also donate time elsewhere throughout San
Diego. There are even active duty military persons participating in the program.

 Approximately 300 VAA donate 45,000 hours annually and assist more than 1.6
million guests of San Diego International Airport.

 Volunteers provide assistance 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Customers are served by

VAA located at the two information desks, mobile volunteers roaming the airport,
or volunteers operating the courtesy shuttle in T2W.

 Annually, VAA transport 25,000 guests of Terminal 2 who require mobility

assistance.

 In 2007, eighty-four VAA received Presidential Volunteer Service Awards for

donating a minimum of 250 annual hours. Silver award recipients have increased
more than 50% from 2006 contributing between 250-500 hours annually. One
VAA donated more than 650 hours!

 The VAA’s warm and enthusiastic assistance was never more important to our
nation’s servicemen and women. VAA assisted thousands of military personnel
and their families with luggage, directions and other types of special assistance
throughout the year.
