Three young boys - Ponyboy Curtis, Dallas Winston, and Johnny Cade - heard cries for help coming from a burning down church. Ponyboy ran into the burning building and threw a rock through a window to get inside. He found eight children huddled in a corner, the door blocked by flames. Johnny Cade followed Ponyboy into the burning church and helped throw the children to safety out the window. Though one boy was severely injured, all the children were rescued from the fire by the heroic actions of the three boys.
