Suggestions and ideas on what ISS should do to make Sociology an
Applied Science and to equip the Sociologists to practice it in the most
professional way

Vulnerability of sociology in the contemporary time of economic uncertainty

and global change can not be ignored. However, these hindering forces that
endanger discipline’s institutional continuation make it intensely pertinent and
important in an age of social makeover. Sociology’s disadvantages may be
overcome by mingling it with a more applied and practical orientation. In this
context Interdisciplinary applications of sociology can be emphasized.
Comprehensive strategy is to be developed to improve the image of
sociology, especially among those who can use sociological knowledge for
their organizational development. Joint ventures by theorists and practitioners
to apply knowledge for solving social problems will benefit the field of applied
sociology. Industry-academic collaboration is necessary. Potential application
fields for sociology should be sorted through discussions. Different ways of
non conventional engagement of sociologists are to be highlighted. Corporate
liaison can be developed for rendering sociological expertise to study and
provide further recommendation for betterment of organizational structure.
Engagement of young sociologists under guidance of experts in these
activities will make them more practical professionals. I would like to propose
for establishing a separate wing of Indian Sociological Society for monitoring
development of sociological practices throughout the country emphasizing
study on both traditional and contemporary social settings by young
sociologists. Micro level ‘Workshops’ and ‘Action Research’ schemes may be
encouraged in every nook and corner of the country through out the year. On
the basis of reports by eminent experts best of these events may be honoured
in the Annual Conference of Indian Sociological Society.
