Afonso Augusto da Costa was born in Seia in 6th March 1871.

He was a Portuguese
republican, lawyer, professor and politician.

He was graduated in Law in the Coimbra University in 1895.

While he was a student, he published an article against the Ultimate.

In April 1896 he was nominated as a teacher and in August 1900 he became lecturer.

In 1900 he was elected member of the Portuguese Parliament.

In 1908 he took part in an attempt of Revolution, but he was arrested. After the
regicide he came back to the Parliament, where his speeches became famous.

With the Implementation of the Republic, he became Minister of Justice and was
responsible for some laws, like the Separation of the Church from the State and the
family laws. He wrote many Law books.

In 1911 he created the Democratic Party and the newspaper “O Mundo”.

He was Prime Minister between 1913 and 1917.

In 1914 he defended the participation of Portugal in the First World War.

In 1917 he went into exile in Paris, where he died in 1937.
