GENERAL LOADING ,CARRIAGE AND UNLOADING PRECAUITOS


(GUIDELINES FOR LOADING AND COVERS PRECAUTIONS FOR THE HIGH
DENSITY CARGO)

1. THE BULK CARGO MUST BE PROPERLY DISTRIBUTED THROUGHT


THE SHIP TO PROVIDE THE ADEQUATE STABILITY AND TO ENSURE
THAT THE SHIP STRUCTURE IS NEVER OVERSTRESSED.
2. WHEN LOADING THE HIGH DENSITY CARGO,PARTICULAR
ATTENTIONS MUST BE PAID TO THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE WEIGHTS
IN ORDER TO AVOID THE EXCESSIVE STRESSED.
3. PROPRE ATTENTION MUST BE GIVEN TO LOADING AND UNLOADING
WHEN THE CONDITIONS ARE DIFFERENT THAN NORMAL
CONDITION.IN SUCH A CASE THE STRUCTURE OR THE ENTIRE HULL
BE UNDER STRESS.
4. THE LOAD MUST BE DISTRIBUTED AS PER DESIGN OF THE SHIP.THE
INFORMATION FOR THE SAME WILL BE PROVIDED IN THE TRIM AND
STABILITY BOOKLETS.
5. THE MASTER SHALL BE ABLE TO CLCULATE THE STABILITY IN
WORST CONDITIONS EXPEXTED DURING THE VOYAGE AND ENSURE
THAT STABILITY IS ADEQUATE.
6. SHIFTING DIVISIONS MUST BE FITTED IF CARGO IS LIKELY TO SHIFT
7. THE HIGH DENSITY CARGO MUST BE LOADED IN THE LOWER HOLD
CARGO SPACE IN PREFERENCE TO THE TWEEN DECK CARGO SPACE.
8. WHEN THE HIGH DENSITY CARGO IS LOADED IN TWEEN DECK OR
HIGHER CARGO SPACES ,THE DECK SHOULD NOT BE OVERSTRESSED
AND STABILITY SHOULD NOT BE REDUCED BELOW THE MINIMUM
ACCEPTBLE LIMIT AS SPECIFIED IN STABILITY BOOKLET.

LOADING AND UNLOADING

• HOLD MUST BE INSPECTED AND PREPARED FOR THE PARTICULAR


CARGO.
• BILGE WELLS AND STRAINER PALTES MUST BE CLEANED
• BILGE COVER MUST BE IN PLACE IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY CARGO
ENTERING INTO THE BILGES.
• BILGE LINES,SOUNDING PIPE MUST BE CKECKED
• THE VELOCITY AT WHICH THE HIGH DENSITY CARGO IS LOADED
MAY DAMAGE THE HOLD STRUCTURE .NECESSARY PRECAUTION
MUST BE TAKEN.
• AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM MUST BE PUT IN RECIRCULATION
MODE IN ORDER TO AVOID ANY DUCT COMING INTO THE
ACCOMMODATION.
• DECK MACHINERY AND EXTERNAL NAVIGATION EQUIPMENT MUST
BE PROTECTED FROM THE DUST.
SAMPLING PROCEDURE:

• SAMPLE MUST BE A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE OF CARGO BEING


LOADED
• SAMPLING MUST BE DONE BY THE SUITABLY TRAINED PERSON
AND HE IN TURNS MUST BE UNDER THE QUALIFIED PERSON WHO
IS HAVING KNOWLEDGE OF PREPERTIES OF THE CARGO.
• PRIOR TAKING SAMPLES,A VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE
CONSIGNMENT MUST BE CARRIED OUT.
• ANY PORTION WHICH LOOKS TO HAVE CONTAMINATED OR
HIGHER MOSTURE CONTENT SHALL BE SAMPLED SEPARATELY
AND ANALYSED.THIS PORTION MAY BE REJECTED IF THE
PARAMETERS OF THE TEST ARE OUTSIDE THE LIMIT.

THE FOLLOWING FACTORS MUST BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT WHILE


SAMPLING:
1. THE TYPE OF MATETIAL
2. THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION
3. THE COMPOSITION OF MATERIAL
4. THE MANNER IN WHICH MATERIAL IS STORED AND
TRANSFERRED TO MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEM.
5. THE CHEMICAL HAZARDS
6. THE CHARACTERISTICS WHICH HAVE TO BE DETERMINED
7. VARIATION IN MOISTURE DISTRIBUTION THROUGH OUT
THE CONSIGNMENT
8. VARIATION MAY OCCUR FOLLOWING THE FREEZING OF
MATERIAL

TRIMMING PROCEDURE

TRIMMING OF CARGO MEANS LEVELLING OF CARGO IN ORDER TO


REDUCE THE
• LIKELIHOOD OF SHIFTING OF CARGO
• AIR ENTERING THE CARGO.AIR ENTERING THE CARGO COLUD LEAD
TO SPONTANEOUS HEATING
THE CARGO SPACES SHALL BE AS FULL AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT
SLIDING OF SOLID BULK CARGO.
CARGO SHALL BE SPREAD AS WIDELY AS PRACTICABLE TO THE BOUNDRY
OF THE CARGO SPACE.
THE CARGO CAN BE TRIMMED MANUALLY OF BY MACHINE.
CHEMICAL HAZARDS:

SLOID BULK CARGOES WHICH MAY POSSESS A CHEMICAL HAZARD


DURING TRANSPORT,BECAUSE OF THEIR CHEMICAL NATURE OR
PROPERTIES.THESSE SBC CARGOES ARE GROUP B CARGO.SOME OF THEM
ARE CLASSIFIED AS DANGEROUS GOODS AND OTHRES ARE MHB.

THE BELOW ARE MORE PRONOUNCED CHEMICAL HAZARDS:

1.CORROSIVITY:THE CARGO HAS GOT CHEMICAL PROPERTIES BY WHICH


IT WILL CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE WHEN IN CONTACT WITH LIVING
TISSUEOR WILL MATERIALLY DAMAGE OR EVEN DESTROY ,OTHER GOODS
OR MEANS OF TRANSPORT.

2.TOXICITY: SBC ARE HAVING PROPERTIES TO CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS


INJURY OR TO HARM HUMAN HEALTH IF SWALLOWED OR INHALED OR BY
SKIN CONTACT

3.FLAMMIBILITY:THE SOME OF SOLID CARGO ARE READILLY


COMBUSTIBLE.

4.SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION:SOME OF THE SBC CARGOES, WHEN IN


CONTACT WITH AIR WITHOUT ENERGY SUPPLIED,ARE LIABLE TO SELF
HEATING.

5.EMMISSION OF FLAMMABLE GASES:SOME OF THE CARGO EMITS THE


FLAMMABLE GASES WHEN IN CONTACT WITH WATER.

6.OXIDISING PROPERTIES:
