Naguni guninam vetti, guni gunishu matsari,

Guni ch gunaragi ch, viralah saralo janah.


A person devoid of merit does not recognize a meritorious person. A meritorious
person may be jealous of other meritorious persons, but a meritorious person who
appreciates the merits of other is indeed rare.
Chayam anyasya kurvanti , tishthanti svayam alape,
Phanyapi pararthay, vrikshaha satpurusha ev aalape.
Themselves they stand in the scorching sun, but offer the shade to others; their
fruits are also for others only. Thus, trees are like noble people.
Apavitra pavitro va sarvavastham gatopi va,
Yassparet pundrikasham s bahyabhyantarshhuchi.
Whether a person is unclean or clean, whatever be the state one is in, if one th
inks of/ prays to the Lord Vishnu (whose eyes are beautiful like a lotus) one be
comes pure externally and internally.
Yavatsvasthmidam deham yavanmrityushch duratah,
Tavadatmhitam kuryat prarante kim karishyati?
When the body is hale and healthy, and when death is far off, then (itself) one
should do whatever is good (shreyas) for oneself. What would one do/ accomplish
at the end of one s life?
Punyasya phalamichanti, punyam nechanti manavah,
Phalam papasya nechanti, papam kurvanti yatnatah.
(Generally speaking) people want Sukha (happiness) which is the result of Punya(
noble deeds), but don t want to do punya; they do not want dukha(unhappiness) whic
h is the result of papah (ignoble deeds), but are bent on doing papah! FUNNY!
Krishno bhogi shukastyagi nripaou janakraghvao,
Vasishtah karmakarta ch ta ete gyaninassmaha.
Krishna was in the midst of bhogas (karmayogi- engrossed in karma throughout); S
huka-maharishi was a renunciate; Janaka are Rama were kings; Vashishta-maharishi
was performing rituals. In their appearances and activities, even though they l
ooked different, they are Jnanis and same. KNOWLEDGE IS SAME, THERE IS NO DIFFER
ENCE.
Yatha dhenusahareshu vatsu gachati matram,
Tatha purvakritam karma kartaramanugachati.
Just as, among thousands of cows, a calf would run only to its mother, the resul
t of actions (done in all the previous janmas and the present one) goes to the d
oer alone.
Ayodhya mathura maya, kashi kanchi hyavantika,
Puri dvaravati chaiva saptaita mokshadayika.
Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (haridwar), Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika(Ujjain) and Dvarika,
are the seven places that give Svarga (heaven).
Na ten sthaviro bhavati yenasya palitam shirah,
Yo vai yuvapyadhiyanah tam devaha sthaviram viduhu.
A person does not become an elder just because his hair turns white (that is, he h
as advanced in age). The devatas consider only him as elder, who is well learned
, even if, young in age.
Vidya vivadaya dhanam maday,
shaktihi pareshanam paripidnaya,
Khalasya sadhorvipreetmetat,
gyanay danay ch rakshanay.
For the ignoble person, learning is for argumentation, wealth is for arrogance,
power is for causing afflictions to others; whereas for a noble person these are
otherwise, learning for wisdom, wealth for charity and power is for protection
(of the weak)
Samyogo viyogantah, dukhantam sukhamev cha,
Poshanam kshayaparyantam, marnantam ch jivanam.
The attachment lasts till dis-association, dukha (unhappiness) lasts till sukha
(happiness) comes, Nourishment till hunger, and death till life.
Kechid agyanato nashtaha, kechinnshtaha pramadatah,
Kechid gyanavlepen kechinnshtaistu nashitaha.
Some people are lost due to ignorance; some due to carelessness\indiscretion; so
me by pride of knowledge\ smattering of knowledge; some are destroyed by those w
ho are lost themselves.
Gate shoko na kartavyah, bhavishyannev chintayet,
Vartamanen kalen pravrante vichakshnaha.
Grieving is not done over, what is gone by. One should not worry over what would
happen (i.e. future). Intelligent people live in the present.
Yo me garbhgatasyapi vritim kalpitvan prabhuhu,
Sheshavrittividhanay s kim suptothava mriyah.
The God (Ishvara) who took care of my livelihood and well being even when I was
in my mother s womb, would he not take care of my well being for the rest of my li
fe? Is he dead or alive?
Tavajjitendriyo na syad, vijit-anya-indriyah puman,
Yavajjyen rasanam, jitam sarvam jite rase.
A person does not become the master of sense organs, if the organ of taste is no
t under control, even if all other sense-organs are mastered. All are won over,
if tongue is under control.
Pratyakshe guravah stutyaha, parokshe mitra bandhavaha,
Karyassyante das-brityaha, svaputraha na kadachan.
Guru should be praised on the face, friends and relatives behind their back; ser
vants at the end of the job, and one s own sons NEVER!
Avashyambhavibhavanam, pratikaro bhavedyadi,
Tada dukhairn lipyeran, nala-rama-yudhishitiraha.
If at all there was a remedy for what is unavoidable, then Nala, Rama and Yudhis
htira would not have come to suffer.
Nakale mriyate jantuh vidhah sharshataiapi,
Kushagrenapi samssprishtah praptkalo na jivati.
A being does not die even when pierced by hundreds of arrows, if the time has no
t come. However, if his time is up, he dies even by touch of a blade of kusha gr
ass.
Purve vayasi tatkuryadyen vridhah sukhi vaset,
Yavajjevet tatkuryadyen pretty sukham vaset.
One should do that in one s earlier life by means of which one would live happily
in old age. As long as one lives, one should do that by means of which one would
be happy (even) after death.
Yo na nirgaty nisshesham vilokyati medineem,
Anekadbhutvrittanam sa narah koopdadurah.
He, who does not go out in the world full of wonderful happenings is nothing but
a frog in the well.
Baladapi grahitavyam yuktmuktam manishibhihi,
Ravervishaye kim na pradeepasya prakashanam.
The wise should honor the proper words even of a child. Does not a lamp illumina
te a place where the sun cannot reach?
Agyah sukhamaradhya sukhtaramaradhyate visheshagyah,
Gyanlavadurvidagdham brahmapi naram na ranjayati.
It is easy to convince an ignorant person. Earlier still it is to convince a lea
rned man. However, even Lord Brahma cannot entertain a stupid person possessing
little knowledge.
Gunadoshao budho grhinnannindukshvedaviveshvarah,
Shirsa shralaghate purva param kanthe niyachati.
A wise man holding both virtue and the vice (of others) keeps the former on head
and (swallows) the latter in his throat just like Lord Shiva carries the moon (
on the head) and the poison (in his throat)
Vesham na vishvaset pragyo vesho doshay jayate,
Ravano bhikshuroopen jahar janakatmjam.
A wise man should not trust (a person from his) dress. Dress can mislead. Ravana
kidnapped the daughter of Janaka (Sita) in the disguise of a beggar.
Na sarvavitkashchidihasti loke,
natyantmurkho bhuvi chapi kashchit,
Gyanen neechottamamadhymen,
yo yam vijanati sa ten vidvan.
Nobody in this world is omniscient; and nobody in the world also is absolutely s
tupid. Whosoever knows (something) is a learned man on account of the low, mediu
m or high knowledge (he possesses)
Dhanaprayogakaryeshu tatha vidhyagameshu ch,
Ahare ch vyavahare ch tyaktlajjah sada bhavet.
One should give up shame while enjoying wealth and also while gaining knowledge,
while taking food and in business transactions.
Brahma yen kulalvanniyamito brahmandbhandodare,
vishnuryen dashavatargahane kshipto mahasankate,
rudro yen kapalpaniputake bhikshatanam karitah,
suryo brhamayati nityamev gagane tasmai namah karmane.
Salute to karman (action) which yoked Lord Brahman as a pot maker in the vessel
called brahmanda, who threw Lord Vishnu in the hard peril of ten incarnations, w
ho made Lord Shiva go begging alms holding potsherd in his folded hands and beca
use of whom the Sun daily moves in the sky.
Small sentences with deep meaning collected from the Vedas
Bubhukshitataivyarkarnam na bhujyate
pipasitaihi kavyaraso na peeyate,
Na chchandasa kenchiduddhritam
kulam hiranyamevarjay nishphala gunaha.
A hungry person does not eat grammar (to satiate his hunger). A thirsty person d
oes not drink the juice of poetry (to quench his thirst). Nobody has elevated hi
s family by means of metrical science. Obtain wealth. (Mere) virtues are useless
.
Asate khalu samsare sukhbhrantihi sharirinam,
Lalapanmivangushthe balanam stanyavibhramah.
People get a false sense of happiness in this worthless work just as an infant s
ucking saliva on its thumb mistakes it for the breast-milk.
Anarambho hi karyasya prathamam budhilaknam,
Prarabdhasyantagmanam dvitiyam budhilakshanam.
The foremost mark of intelligence is not to start any work. The second mark of i
ntelligence is to accomplish the work that is undertaken.
Acharah kulamakhyati vapurakhyati bhojanam,
Vachanam shrutmakhyati snehamakhyati lochanam.
(One s) behavior speaks about one s family. The body gives an idea one s diet. Learnin
g can be conjectured from one s speech. Friendship is always reflected in the eyes
.
Vidusham vadnadvacho yanti no sahasa bahihi,
Yatashchenn paranchanti dvirdanam rada iva.
Usually words (speech) do not come out of the mouth of the learned people. If at
all they come out they do not turn back just as the teeth of the elephants.
Shasranyadhityapi bhavanti murkhaha,
Yastu kriyavan ourushah sa vidvan,
Suchintitam chaoshdhmaturanam,
Na nammatren karotyarogam.
People remain fools even after studying various sciences (if they do not apply t
hem). He who acts (according to the knowledge he has gained) is a learned man. A
medicine which is well thought over cannot cure a patient of his disease by a m
ere mention of its name.

Skhalitah skhalito vadhya iti chennishchayo bhavet,


Dvitra evavshishyyeran bahudosha hi manavaha.
If it is decided to kill everyone that commits mistake, just two of three person
s would be left (in this world) if at all. People at large are prone to committi
ng errors.
Kamakrodhavanirjitya kimaranye karishyati,
Atha va nirjitavetao kimaranye karishyati.
What will a person do in a forest if he has not controlled his passion and anger
? And if he has already controlled his passion and anger then what has he to do
in a forest?

Eershyi ghrini tvasantushtah krodhano nityashankitah,


Parbhagyopjivi ch shadete dukhabhaginah.
The following (are the) six kind of unhappy persons: the envious, the hateful, t
he dissatisfied, the wrathful, the over suspicious, and the one living on other s
fortune.
Guna gunagyeshu guna bhavanti,
Te nirgunam prapya bhavanti doshah,
Susvadutoyaha prabhavanti nadyah.
Virtues remain as virtues for those persons who recognize virtues. The same (vir
tues) however, become defects for a person devoid of merits. Rivers are (full of
) tasty waters when they spring up. However, (their waters) are no more fit for
drinking when they reach the sea.
Durjanen samam sakhyam preetim chapi na karyet,
Ushano dahati changarah sheetah krishnayate karam.
One should have no affection or friendship with ignoble/ wicked people. The char
coal burns hand when it is hot and blackens it, when cold.
Kshama shasram kare yasya durjanah kim karishyati,
Atrine patito vahnihi svayamevopshamyati.
What can a wicked person do to him, who wields the weapon of forgiveness in his
hand? The fire that has fallen in a place where there is no grass, gets extingui
shed on its own.
Atiparichyadvagya santatagamanadaro bhavati,
Malaye bhiradhpurandhari chandanatarukashthaminthanam kurute.
Excessive intimacy (with a person) leads to disregard. Disrespect is caused by c
onstantly visiting (a person). A tribal woman staying on the Malaya (mountain) u
ses sandalwood as fuel.
Vritha vrishtihi samudreshu vritha triptasy bhojanam,
Vritha danam samarthasy vritha deepo divapi ch.
Rainfall in the sea is useless; Food given to one who has had his fill is a wast
e. Giving a gift to a rich is futile and a lamp serves no purpose in the day.
Atmano mukhdoshen badhyante sukasarikaha,
Bakastatra na badhyante maunam sarvarthsadhanam.
The parrot and cuckoo bird are caged due to fault (sweetness) of their mouth (vo
ice). The cranes however are not caged, silence achieves all purpose.
Apoorvaha koopi koshoyam vidhyate tav bharati,
Vyayato vridhimayati vyayamayati sanchayat.
Oh! Goddess of learning, your treasure is extraordinary. It increases when consu
med and goes on diminishing when stored away.
Atidanat balibardho hyatimanat suyodhanah,
Vinashto ravano laolyadati savatra varjayet.
King Bali was bound due to excessive liberality. Suyodhana (lost) because of exc
essive self-conceit. Ravana was destroyed due to excessive greed. Hence, one sho
uld stay away from anything excessive everywhere.
Yaovanam dhanasampattihi prabhutvamvivekita,
Ekaikamapyanarthay kimu yatr chatushtayam.
Any one of the following, youth, riches, authority and recklessness can lead to
peril, what to say if all the four are combined together.
Valiibhirmukhamakrantam palitairankitam shirah,
Gatrani shithilayante trinaika tarunayate.
The face is covered by wrinkles, the head is marked with white hair, and the lim
bs have slackened but DESIRE IS STILL YOUNG!
