SD211: CIVIL ENGINEERING MATERIALS I 2003/2004 [3.5 UNITS]

A. COURSE OBJECTIVES
 To provide an overview of the general properties of building materials;
 To provide basic knowledge of the manufacture, composition, behaviour and application in
construction of metals and timber.

B. COURSE STRUCTURE AND TIME ALLOCATION


 Lectures: 3 hours per week
 Laboratory practicals: 1 hour per week
C. OUTLINE SYLLABUS

 General Introduction to the Structure and Behaviour


of Building Materials: System of Units, standardization,
physical properties and mechanical properties, density,
porosity, thermal behaviour, strength, deformation and
fracture behaviour, influence of time.

 Metals: Iron and steel - production process, internal


structure, strengthening methods, properties of structural
steels, welding, notches, corrosion; non-ferrous metals.

 Timber: Timber as a building material, grading philosophy,


wood structure, defects, grading, physical and mechanical
properties of Tanzanian timber, durability and preservation,
timber connections, wood composites, application.
D. ASSESSMENT

 University Examination 60%


 Continuous Assessment 40%

 2 semester tests each carrying 20%


 Satisfactory laboratory reports at end of
semester

NOTES:
 Laboratory practicals will be conducted in small groups of up to 25
students each. A schedule of practicals will be announced at the
beginning of semester. All laboratory reports for the course shall be kept
in a single course work file, and shall be produced whenever required.
