Topic – BLUETOOTH AND INFRARED

Basics
 Short-range wireless communications technology

Key features
 Low power and Low cost
 Simultaneously handle data and voice transmissions
Working
• Bluetooth is a standard for a small , cheap radio chip to
be plugged into computers, printers, mobile phones
which transmits data at a special frequency to a receiver
Bluetooth chip, which will then give the information
received to the computer, phone whatever.

Spectrum
 Operates on (ISM) band at 2.4 to 2.485 GHz
 Nominal rate of 1600 hops/sec
Range and types
 Class 3 radios- 1 meter or 3 feet
 Class 2 radios-10 meters or 33 feet
 Class 1 radios- 100 meters or 300 feet

Data rate
 1 Mbps for version 1.2, & upto3 Mbps for version 2.0 EDR
 24 mbps for version 3.0 HS
Basics & working
• In infrared communication an LED transmits the
infrared signal as a non-visible light. At the receiving
end a photodiode or photoreceptor detects and
captures the light pulses, which are then processed to
Retrieve the information they contain.

Applications of infrared technology

 Communication devices , car locking system, computers,
home security, navigation
Advantages
 Low power, low cost
 Simple circuitry
 Security
 Portable
Disadvantages
 Short range
 Blocked by common materials
 Light & weather sensitive
 Low speed
