Portimão opens the door to visitors from all world. This event is well attended by Portuguese and tourists alike and is organised by the local council. Festival History ü The first Edition of the Festival of the Sardine and the sea in Portimão was in 1985; ü In the first year had 15,000 visitors; ü 5 years later, in 1990, the number of visitors came up to 40 000 visitors; ü between 1991 and 2001 the Festival was closed; ü The Festival returned only in 2001, occupying the space of the modern park Fairs and Exhibitions of Portimão. Festival program ü Ethnographic animation - visitors can find information about the various uses, customs and traditions of the people of Portimão, watch the art of repairing fishing nets craft; ü Concourse “Papa Sardinhas” - during the Festival runs the Concourse “Papa Sardinhas” , that challenges the ability and the taste of visitors by sardines. A hobby in which participants have to eat as much grilled sardines for 15 minutes.
