CLASSIFICATION OF NETWORKS

 Local Area Network (LAN) –

Two or more computers directly linked within a limited area.
The components of a Local Area Network are

◦ Two or more computers

◦ Coaxial or fiber optics cable used to connect the computer.

 Wide Area Network (WAN) –

Cover larger geographical area, often a country.
 TOPOLOGY

Node – Each computer or device in a network is called a node.

The geometric arrangement of these nodes is called “Network Topologies”
Types of network topologies:

Bus Network –
Consists of a single medium that all the nodes share. Everyone shares the
resources
Advantage of Bus Topology :
 Simple wiring layout
 Easy to extend
Disadvantage of Bus Topology
 Fault diagnosis is difficult
 If one node fails, the data does not reach other nodes.
STAR TOPOLOGY

All communication must go through a central network.

All computers are connected to a server or hub or a
switch. Similar to switching of a telephone line

Advantages
 Centralize control
 Ease to access

Disadvantages
 Central node dependency
Ring Topology

Devices are connected in a loop. It can be

unidirectional or bidirectional
Advantage
•Short cable length
No centralized control
Disadvantage
Node failure causes network failure
Difficult to diagnose faults
TREE TOPOLOGY
TREE NETWORK
Several devices are linked in a hierarchical fashion
Advantages
 Easy to extend

HYBRID NETWORK

Combination of two or more topologies.

MESH NETWORK
MESH NETWORK
 Point to point connection in all devices in the network

 Not a practical application because of its expensive

nature
Advantage

If one link fails, the network is still working

 It is generally used as an inter – country arrangement
