THE PUEBLO REVOLT


Don Juan de Onate

 Onate was chosen to go to New Mexico


because of these reasons, Onate had a
military background serving for 20 years also
he was an upper class level.
 Onate was born in 1552 in New Spain.
 Later on after Onate’s wife died in the 1580’s ,
Onate wrote the King asking if he could
settle out in New Mexico.
Attemps

 Onate waited 2 years before he got to settle


in New Mexico. While this Onate was given
the right to give any kind of land to settlers.
 In mid April the group reached the Piros
Indians.
The Role of
Franciscan Missions
 The Franciscan Missions was to do with
religion.
 There was Franciscan missionary's that would
teach the pueblo people about the religion.
 There were harsh laws if anyone was caught
practicing pueblo religion.
Don Pedro de Peralta

 Don Pedro’s importance to New Mexico is the


fact that he caused the conflict’s between
church and the state between the time of
Onate and the Pueblo Revolt.
Bernardo Lopez de Mendizabal

 Lopez became the governor 1659.


 Lopez did an investigation on mistreatment
of Indians.
 Lopez was charged with Sexual misconduct
and rape. He denied the Rape but was open
with everything else.
 I think that he could have prevented the
Pueblo Revolt by choosing different chocies.
Fray Lazaro Jimenez

 Fray Lazaro Jimenez decision was


recommending to give up the colony.
 He returned to New Mexico and converted
7,ooo Indians.
 The Spanish Crown ended up saying that they
will not abandon New Mexico after all.
Encomienda

 established social and racial relations as the


basis for the economic and political order in
the Spanish areas of the Americas.
The Inquisition
 The Inquisition was to find riches and gold at
first and to own new land.

 The converting the Puebloans was a new


thing when the Spaniards were like this is our
land now and you have to do what I say.
Po’pay

 Po’pay was an amazing leader , he was one of


the natives who decided that enough is
enough. All the meeting’s he planned against
the Spaniards . All his meeting’s includid near
by villages. He was a very brave man.
