A urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria entering the urethra and ascending into the bladder or kidneys. The bacteria can form clumps and cause inflammation in the urinary tract organs. Untreated UTIs can lead to scarring of the kidneys, reduced kidney function, and ultimately kidney failure as tissue is destroyed over time. Risk factors include reflux of urine back up the urinary tract, urine retention in the bladder, and prior scarring in the kidneys.
