Youth Service America

1101 15th St. NW, Suite 200,
Washington, District of Columbia, 20005

To Whom it May Concern:

I am writing to you express my interest in the Social Media Internship at Youth Service America. I have
become very interested in the work of the organization and look to apply a lot of what I have learned at
Saint Joseph’s University to the position.

As a Communications minor I have taken classes that will contribute to the social media aspect of the
position. I took an Introduction to Journalism course in which I created a video and started a blog. In my
Communications Theory and Practice course, I have continued to write on my blog, created a Twitter and
learned more about design in terms on aesthetics and communicating information. As an intern, I would
love to help Youth Service America develop a social media strategy and implement Twitter and Fickr to
build an online community. I would also love to plan an event at Saint Joseph’s to raise awareness about the
work of Youth Service America.

As a work study in the Faith Justice Institute at Saint Joseph’s, I have learned about community and what it
means to be part of a team. Moreover, I have also learned the importance of non-profit organizations and
their importance and wonderful contributions. YSA looks like it has a lot of connections in the technological
world and I am interested to develop what it already has developed as well as learning about your
connections with media avenues I don’t know (i.e. GetUrGoodOn.org).

Given my class and work experience, I feel that I would be a great asset to Youth Service America and its
mission. I am very committed to making sure that the youth in YSA develop their leadership and learning
skills. For so long I have thought about working with kids in either education or some form of counseling,
given my previous experience as a camp counselor. YSA gives me that opportunity in addition to
developing social media and communication needs.

I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration. If you have any questions please
don’t hesitate to call or email me at the number and address above.

Sincerely,

Doug McNicol
