Porturaca oleraceae L. or Krokot is an erect


perennial. It is fast growing and once estabilished. It
easing reseeds it self. It has a wonderful survival
tactic : the succulent ( juicy) stem, keeps it from
drying out. If someone decides krokot is a “weed”
and uproots it, it uses the water in the stem to make
the seeds before it dies, and soon there will be even
more krokot. It can be found wild as well as
cultivated is in some locations regarded as a weed.

Krokot has paddle-shaped and succulent leaves. It is


about o,5-2 inches long, and 1-2 cm width. Its colour
is old green on up and old red on the bottom. It is spirally arranged to nearby opposite, often
crowded at the top of the stem, and shortly petiolate. Krokot has a creeping stem. The stem has
round shaped. It is about 4-10 inches long. It has reddish colour. It is segmented and branches
with 2 lateral. Krokot has inconspicuous flower shape. It is about 6 mm wide. It has 5 yellow
petals hide between the base of the leaf and the stem. The flower early and year round. It is open
singly at the center of the leaf cluster for only few hours on sunny mornings. The flowers are
mainly self polinating. Krokot has a yellow capsule fruit. It is about 4-7 mm long. Krokot has
numeruous shining black compresed globose-reniform seeds inside the fruit. It is about 0,8-1,2
mm long.

In China, krokot can be used for reducing inflammation, curing diarrhea, newborn
jaundice, avitaminosis, chincough, leucorrhea (whites), and for detoxification purpose. Also can
be eaten like spinach or as salad.
