Thermal properties
of matter
Thermalcouple thermometer
 Consists of two wires make of different metals to
form cold and hot junctions.
 A voltage reading will be picked up by the
millivoltmeter.
Heat capacity
 Defined as the amount of heat needed to
increase the temperature of a body by 1K.
 Unit is JK^-1
 Q = C Δθ
 Dependent on both mass and material of the
object
Specific heat capacity
 Is the amount of heat required to raise the
temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1degrees
or 1K.
 c = Q/m Δθ
 Q is the heat energy in joules
 M is the mass in kg
 Δθ is the temperature change in degrees or
K.
Melting and solidification
 Changes of state from solid to liquid and vice
versa.
Latent heat
 Is the energy released or absorbed during a change of
state.

 Latent heat of fusion of a solid is the amount of thermal

energy required to change it from solid to liquid state,
or vice versa, without a change in temperature.

 Specific latent heat of fusion of a solid is the amount of

thermal energy required to change 1kg of the solid to
liquid, or vice versa, without any change in
temperature.
Evapouration
 Can occur any temperature.
 Causes cooling.
 Temperature and humidity and surface area and
movement of air and pressure and boiling point
of the liquid can
affect the rate
of evaporation.
