CARES FOR YOU
Health reasons to quit smoking
(for the benefit of self)

Smoking causes serious health problems, including:

cancers of the lung, throat, mouth, larynx, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder,
cervix and stomach
leukemia (a cancer of blood-forming tissues)
 lung diseases
atherosclerosis or hardening and narrowing of the arteries
 heart attacks
 stroke
 gum disease
eye diseases that can lead to blindness

Smoking also:
 makes illnesses last longer
causes more wound infections after surgery
makes it harder to get pregnant
increases your risk of getting a hip fracture

Smoking while pregnant can cause:

 Placenta previa—the placenta grows too
close to the opening of the uterus or womb. As a result, the baby cannot be delivered
through the vagina and must be delivered by cesarean section or C-section.
Placental abruption—the placenta separates too early from the wall of the uterus.
This can lead to early labor or infant death.
early rupture of membranes or water breaking, before labor starts, so the baby is born
too early
a baby with a low birth weight
 damage to an infant's lungs

Other Benefits of Quitting

places to smoke. Over time, you will see some of the other benefits of quitting:
 your teeth will be cleaner
 your breath will smell better
the stain marks on your fingers will fade
 your skin is less wrinkled
you are able to smell and taste things better
You will also feel stronger and be able to be more active.

Second hand smoking – Passive smoking
(for benefit of your family)

What is Secondhand Smoke?

Secondhand smoke is the smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar
combined with the smoke breathed out by the smoker. You can be exposed to secondhand
smoke anytime a person smokes near you.

Dangers of Secondhand Smoke

Secondhand smoke causes about 3,000 deaths from lung cancer and about 46,000
deaths from heart disease every year. The more you are around secondhand smoke; the more
likely you are to get sick. There is no safe amount of secondhand smoke.

Other health problems caused by secondhand smoke include

 nasal sinus cancer
 eye, nose and throat irritation
 coughing
 congestion

Tips for Avoiding Secondhand Smoke

If you live with a smoker:
 Ask her/him to smoke outside.
 If she/he refuses, suggest other
ways to protect yourself and your
children. Ask the smoker to
smoke only in one room or smoke
at home only when you and the children are not there.
Open a window to let some fresh air in or use a fan to blow the smoke outside.
Support smokers who are trying to quit.
When visitors come:
Ask smokers who visit, not to smoke in your house.
In others' homes:
Ask others nicely to not smoke around you.
Let smokers know if you're having problems (such as coughing or itchy eyes) because
of their smoking.
If you have children:
Ask babysitters, family members and caregivers not to smoke around your children.
If the smoker still smokes around your children, have your children leave the room or
play outside while she/he is smoking.

Please do not try these alternatives
Harmful alternative - Cigars and Pipes
Although women don’t smoke cigars and pipes as much as men, recent data show the
number of women smoking cigars is increasing. Many people think that cigars and pipes are
safer than cigarettes, but this is not true. Even if you don’t inhale, you’re still at higher risk
for oral and throat cancers. Cigar and pipe smokers also have higher rates of lung cancer and
heart disease than nonsmokers.

Harmful alternative - Menthol cigrattes

Menthol cigarettes have a minty taste that makes some smokers think they are healthier
than regular cigarettes. This is not true! In fact, menthol cigarettes contain even more
chemicals than regular cigarettes. Also, menthol can make it easier for a smoker to inhale
deeply, which may allow more chemicals to enter the lungs. As a result, menthol cigarettes
may be even more harmful than regular cigarettes.

Harmful alternative - Smokeless tobacco

Smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to cigarettes. It is addictive and can cause cancer!
Smokeless tobacco comes in two forms:
Snuff is a finely ground tobacco. In the United States, snuff is the most popular type of
smokeless tobacco. Users put a pinch of snuff (also called a "dip" or a "rub") between
the cheek and gum in the mouth and hold it there.
Chewing tobacco is bulkier than snuff and is chewed. Chewing tobacco comes in leaf
and plug forms.
Like all forms of tobacco, smokeless tobacco contains nicotine, an addictive drug that
gets you hooked on tobacco. Holding one pinch of smokeless tobacco in your mouth for 30
minutes delivers as much nicotine as 3-4 cigarettes.
In addition, at least 28 cancer-causing chemicals have been identified in smokeless
tobacco, including:
Nitrosamines—the most powerful cancer-causing agents in smokeless tobacco.
Smokeless tobacco contains from 20 to 43,000 times more nitrosamines than other
consumer products, such as beer or bacon!
polonium 210—a radioactive form of the element polonium
formaldehyde—a chemical found in the fluid used to preserve dead bodies
cadmium—a metallic element used in batteries
arsenic—a poisonous element used in insecticides
cancers of the mouth, pharynx (throat) and esophagus (the tube that carries food to
the stomach)
shrinking of the gums around your teeth
cracked lips, white spots, sores and bleeding in the mouth
increased risk for heart disease and stroke

Harmful alternative - Marijuana
Marijuana is a dried mixture of stems, leaves and seeds from the Cannabis sativa plant. Slang
terms for marijuana include pot, weed, reefer, joint and grass. It is usually smoked as a
cigarette or in a pipe called a bong. Marijuana contains over 400 other chemicals, some of
which may cause
Marijuana can cause many health problems, including:
 problems with memory and learning
 distorted perception
difficulty in thinking and problem solving
 loss of coordination
anxiety, panic attacks and paranoia (being excessively suspiciousness and
distrustfulness of others)
increased risk of a heart attack
reduced ability of the immune system to fight disease
Like smoking tobacco, smoking marijuana may cause:
 coughing
 trouble breathing
 lung diseases
One study showed that marijuana smoking doubled or tripled the risk of developing
cancers of the head or neck. Marijuana also may cause lung cancer. In fact, marijuana smoke
contains 50 to 70 percent more cancer-causing compounds than does tobacco smoke.
