Abstract

Indian in the Portuguese colonies: How they felt the end of the Empire

The Portuguese colonial Empire was attacked in two phases, before its disintegration in
1974. A first moment when the independence of the Indian colonies, in 1961 and a second
definitive moment, with the independence of the African territories. Through
documentary analysis and statistics, accompanied by life stories, it was possible to
understand the role and relationship of Indians (Goan, hindus and Muslims) in Colonia of
Mozambique, as well as the impact that these two disruptive moments had in Indian
populations decision-making. In the first crisis of Empire, in 1961, the Indian option was
their definitive fixation in Mozambique; but in 1974, Indians felt the need to choose
again ... In each context and political reactions to social movement implicated more or
less deep the different Indian groups, who are directly involved in the process of
transformation of the structures that made up the Portuguese empire.
