Variation of Conductance
with Concentration

Sardea, Nico Angelo

Objective

To determine the variation of the

conductance of an electrolyte with its
concentration in an aqueous solution.
Principle
Conductance is the measure of the ability of
a material to carry an electrical current,
(G).
The conductance of an electrolyte solution
is dependent on the concentration of an
electrolyte.
As the number of the ion increases, it is
expected that the current flow in the
solution should increase proportionally.
Materials and Apparatus
0.1 M HCl
0.1 M acetic acid
0.1 M KCl

Graduated
cylinders: wash bottle
100-mL and
10-mL
Conductivity meter

beaker and stirrer

Procedure
Prepare several solutions containing different
concentrations of the acid solution.
mixture mL acid sol’n mL water
1 30.0 0.0
2 21.0 9.0
3 15.0 15.0
4 9.0 21.0
5 3.0 27.0
SET K

COND

1.413

Plug the meter to 220V socket and turn the

switch ON.
Calibrate using the KCl solution.
Immerse the electrode into the test If the reading goes zero, adjust the
solution. range.

Measure the conductance of each mixture.

Wash well and
dry the probe
before using it for
the next mixture.

Rinse the electrode with distilled water using wash bottle.

Necessary calculations made prior to the
experiment.
V1C1 = V2C2
(1 mL) (12 M) = V2 (0.1 M)

V2 = 120 mL

Therefore, 1 mL of the concentrated acid and

119 mL of distilled water are needed to
prepare 1.0 M of acid solution.
Data and Results
Hydrochloric Acid (HCl)
mixture Conductance Conductance

1 78.8x10-3 74.1x10-3
2 51.6x10-3 48.9x10-3
3 31.7x10-3 28.5x10-3
4 13.2x10-3 11.9x10-3
5 5.72x10-3 4.52x10-3

The unit of conductance is Siemens (S).

Treatment of Results

V1C1 = V2C2
(21 mL) (0.1 M) = (30 mL) C2

C2 = 0.07 M
mixture mL acid sol’n mL water Concentration

1 30.0 0.0 0.10 M

2 21.0 9.0 0.07 M

3 15.0 15.0 0.05 M

4 9.0 21.0 0.03 M

5 3.0 27.0 0.01 M

Use: Am = 128.96 S cm2 mol-1
c = 0.1 M KCl
k = Am c
k = 12.896 S cm2 L-1
G = k A/l
1.413 S = (12.896 S cm2 L-1) A/l
A/l = 0.10957 L/cm2
