ELECTROLYTIC CONDUCTANCE

Introduction :

The specific conductance "K" of an electrolyte solution is defined as

the conductivity of a column1cm long and 1cm in cross section of this
solution.

Numerically, it is equal to the reciprocal of the specific resistance

(ρ) defined as the resistance of the same column of solution. This
could obtain by measuring the resistance of cell constructed of
two plane parallel electrodes 1 cm 2 in area and 1cm apart.

Conductivity cells, however, usually do not satisfy these

requirements, and it is therefore necessary to determine the
constant characteristic of the cell "K" the relation between K & R is
as following:

1
K= . . .. .. (1 )
R

 Where:
K: Specific conductivity. Unit (Ω-1.m-1) or (Ω-1.cm-1)
sometimes "Ω-1 "called mho”
R: the measured resistance of the cell. Unit ohm (Ω)

The equivalent conductance (λc) is the conductance of a solution

containing one gm- equivalent of solution when placed between
two plane parallel electrodes of suction area and 1cm apart. The
relation between (λc) and "K" is as follows:

λc=K ×V =K ×
[ ]
1000
C
. .. . .. .. .. ...(2 )

 Where:
V: is the volume of solution in cubic centimeters that
contains one gm equivalent of Solution.
C: electrolytic concentration in gm- equivalent /L.
The relationship between the degree of dissociation concentration
and dissociation constant "Ka" of a weak acid such as "acetic
acid" is given by ostwald law of dilution:

A .B
ka=
AB

Determination of weight of "oxalic acid"

n m
N= n=
v ----(1) , M ----(2)
from 1 and 2
m=N∗M∗V
m= 0.4*126.07*0.1
m= 2.54 gm

Procedure:
1) Prepare 2.54gm oxalic and solvate in little of distilled water and added there of
solution distilled water to the 100ml

2) Take 500ml from carafe 1 to the carafe 2 and add distilled water to the ml

Repeat the step 2 four time for all carofes
