Title: Activated Sludge Microbiology and Problem Troubleshooting

Proper operation of activated sludge requires the care and feeding of a diverse assemblage of microorganisms. There is good
microbiology and poor microbiology, the latter frequently represented by sludge filamentous and slime bulking and foaming. This one
day course will cover the microbiology of activated sludge: the good, the bad and the ugly. Emphasis will be placed on the causes and
control of activated sludge bulking and foaming. The different filaments that cause problems will be covered along with specific
control options for each filament.
TDr. Michael Richard, Stantec Consulting, will teach the course. Dr. Richard is an expert on activated sludge microbiology. He has
published 50 articles, written more than 60 technical reports, and has given more than 300 invited presentations nationwide. He has
conducted 200 hands-on wastewater treatment microbiology workshops throughout the US and Canada. He is the author of the WEF
book Activated Sludge Microbiology, and is co-author of Manual on Solving Activated Sludge Bulking, Foaming and Other Solids
Separation Problems, Lewis Publishers Third Edition (2003).
