Nutrients found in food are chemical substances used by the human body, including essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and water. A shortage of essential amino acids can lead to health issues like lack of blood proteins, tissue swelling, and physical or mental delays in children. Phenylketonuria (PKU) is caused by an inability to convert the amino acid phenylalanine, and if not treated with a low-phenylalanine diet after early diagnosis, it can affect physical and mental development.

A.1.1: Nutrient is a chemical substance founds in food that is used in the
human body. A.1.2: The essential nutrients are; some amino acid, some unsaturated fatty acids, some minerals, vitamins, and water. A.1.3: Non-essential amino acids can be made from other simpler nitrogen compounds. A.1.4: The shortage of one or more essential amino acid in one’s body can lead to serious consequences such as : lack of blood plasma proteins and tissue fluid retention and swelling of the abdomen. In children it can lead to physical and mental retard. A.1.5: The cause of PKU is the body being unable to convert phenylalanine into tyrosine since the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase cannot be produced. The consequences of this disease if not treated properly it can affect the physical and mental development of the body. If diagnosed earlier could prevent more serious consequences by having a special diet containing low levels of phenylalanine.
