CITIZEN ADVOCACY: IN BRIEF

What is Citizen Advocacy?

In service to the Gospel of Jesus Christ; Citizen Advocacy is a relationship-building

program that brings isolated people into greater community life. We selectively match
one person with developmental disabilities (‘protégé’) with another person who enjoys a
more ordinary life (‘advocate’).

Citizen Advocacy then supports advocates as they strive to understand, represent, and
respond to the interests of their protégé.

Why is Citizen Advocacy important?

People with disabilities are often:

 Abused and neglected

 Lower in social status than others
 Involuntarily moved and separated from others
 Missing out on ordinary life experiences
 Lacking personal control over their lives

What can advocates do?

Advocates can:

 Provide protection from exploitation and neglect

 Increase the social status of handicapped people
 Create acceptance and inclusion through freely-given relationships
 Provide continuity through long-term relationships
 Create a wider range of positive life experiences
 Increase the amount of control in a person’s life
