Course Title: Modern Digital Communication Systems Max. Marks:7

PART-A

1.Explain the concept of multiplexing using a simple diagram ? Also explain its types.

2. Explain the SONET network and its layers with neat diagrams? Also explain the STS-1
SONET frame format

3. Explain the concept and architecture of an Optical Transport Network ?

PART-B

4. For a satellite earth station receiver working on 4GHz, the typical various gains and noise
temperatures are Tin = 50K, TRF = 50k, Tm = 500K, TIF = 1000k, GRF = 23 dB, Gm = 0Db, GIF =
30dB. Calculate the system noise temperature.

5. For an earth station having an antenna of diameter 30m and overall efficiency of 68%, the
working signal frequency is 4150MHz. At this frequency the system noise temperature is 79K
when the antenna points at the satellite at an elevation angle of 28 K. Calculate G/T ratio of the
earth station. In case the sky noise temperature rises to 88K, what would be the new G/T ratio?

6. How is the uplink design different than the downlink design ? In what conditions a complete
satellite link become downlink limited ?
