KANLAON VOLCANO ADVISORY

03 May 2005
1700 H

CLARIFICATION ON KANLAON VOLCANO ACTIVITY

This refers to inquiries and reports being circulated via the media and by individuals
who have called the PHIVOLCS offices to the effect that evacuation is taking place
in communities surrounding Kanlaon (Negros Island, 10°24.7’N, 123°7.9’E, 2,435m
ASL) because of eruption of this volcano. PHIVOLCS wishes to clarify that there
is neither evacuation recommended nor is there any mass departure of
people based on direct reports from PHIVOLCS’ field stations and local
officials.

Reports on the alleged evacuation misquoted contingency plans by the LGUs

previously formulated a consultation with PHIVOLCS in response to minor ash
emission in January and since March 24 this year. These plans are normal
procedures in producing a public safety plan in case a major eruption occurs at any
volcano. At present, there is neither major eruption occurring nor is there a major
eruption anticipated in the very near future. There is no reason to recommend an
evacuation at this point . There is also no need to close down any facilities related
to the normal day-to-day activities of residents in Negros Island much less in other
parts of the country.

As shown by today’s bulletin and other announcements issued by PHIVOLCS for

Kanlaon Volcano, the ongoing activity’s extent involving ash emission is mostly
localized and affecting only the upper slopes (within 4 kilometers of the active
summit crater). Kanlaon is presently at Alert Level 1 which means that it is
undergoing repeated ash explosions with significant deposits affecting mainly a 4-
kilometer radius area surrounding the crater. This area also coincides with the 4-
kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) where entry is strictly prohibited

We hope this Advisory serves to clarify and dispel all misleading reports on the
present activity of Kanlaon Volcano and to address any rumors that may
detrimentally affect productivity in all sectors of our society.
