ESSAY WRITING CONTEST:

TO THE FILIPINO YOUTH

Instructions:

1. Read the Poem, “To the Filipino Youth” (please see attached).

2. In your essay, write 500 words about Dr. Jose Rizal’s ideals, his dreams
about the “fatherland”, the Philippines.

3. What do you think he is saying to the Filipino youth of his time?

4. What were his visions of an ideal Filipino youth expressed in the poem?

5. Is his message relevant today as it was during the Spanish period in the
Philippines?

6. Read other sources about the Life of Jose P. Rizal. There are books,
pamphlets, articles at the Rizal’ Library and Archives. (Jose Rizal Heritage
Center).

7. Do a bibliography of the books you have read.


Evaluation:

• 20 percent - Interpretation
• 20 percent - Application of Rizal’s picture (description of the
Filipino youth)
• 25 percent - Mechanics, such as correct grammar, punctuation,
spelling and writing style
• 20 percent - Originality of ideas
• 5 percent - Submission of written essay on time

Total 100 percent

Memorize the poem and deliver it at the Program Induction Dinner
