Student 6: “One hundred (100) pesos is equivalent to
ten (10) hours of computer rental.”

“Students will watch the video of our interview”

“We went to Luneta and Intramuros to gather

information about Jose Rizal and we also conducted
an interview about what they know about our national
hero, Jose Rizal.”
(Students watching the video)

“You know what class? I just want to share, based on

our experience, your one hundred (100) pesos; can
bring you back in the past and experience the life of
Jose Rizal by visiting those places.”
“The prison cell of Jose Rizal and the room where his
trial occurred was located at Fort Santiago in
Intramuros while Bagumbayan or known today as
Luneta is the place of Rizal’s execution. The National
Historical Commission of the Philippines took care of
these places and preserved some of the relics and
memoirs of Jose Rizal and you can see those at Rizal
Shrine at Fort Santiago. Aside from the two, you can
also visit the Baluarte de San Diego, Manila
Cathedral, National Museum, National Museum of
Anthropology, National Museum of Arts and many
more places that contributed a lot in our history. That
is how far your one hundred (100) pesos will take
you.”

5.Motivation
“Now, before we proceed to our lesson, let us have
some game. The name of this game is ‘Fact of Bluff’;
it is based on the famous television game show
‘Celebrity Bluff’. “

“In this game, we will show statements about our

national hero ‘Jose Rizal’, the player will answer
either fact or bluff.”

“I need four (4) volunteers”

(Four (4) students will volunteer.)

“Jose Rizal is about five (5) feet and three (3) inches.
Is it fact or Bluff?” Student 7: “It is a bluff, sir.”

“It is a fact; Jose Rizal also had a big head and had a
waistline about twenty-five (25) to twenty-six (26)
inches.

“Rizal had a third, unfinished novel. Is it a fact or

bluff?” Student 8: “Bluff, sir.”

“It is a fact also, Known among historians as

‘Makamisa,’ this unfinished work was started by
Rizal in Hong Kong in 1892. Makamisa was not
actually the title of Rizal’s work, but the only title of
a single chapter of the unfinished Tagalog novel.”

“Rizal’s original execution photo features a dog, the

mascot of the firing squad.”
Student 9: “It is a fact, sir.”
“Your answer is correct, It is said that the dog ran
around the corpse whining after a soldier fired one
last shot in Rizal’s head to make sure he was dead.”

“Rizal once sent a love letter written in invisible

ink.”

“The letter was actually sent to Leonor Valenzuela, a Student 10: “Fact, sir.”
tall girl from Pangsanjan. The message could only be
deciphered if you put the letter over a lamp or a
candle.”

6. Lesson Proper
“The defining moment in the history of our country
took place at about midnight on June 19, 1861in the
lakeshore of Calamba, Laguna, when Rizal, one of the
many babies born on that day, was destined to sow
the seed of freedom in the hearts and minds of his
countrymen.”

“There were no unusual signs from Mother Nature

that heralded his birth, but three days after his birth
when he was baptized by Father Rufino Collantes, the
parish priest noticed the unusual size of the baby’s
head. Student 11: “Then his mother had a hard time giving
birth to him, sir?”
“Yes, and it was said that his big head almost
claimed the life of his mother.”

“This impressed Father Collantes which made him

tell the members of the family to take good care of the
child, for he would become a ‘great man’.”

“And for additional information, do you know that

on January 18, 1861, Maestro Julian Felipe, composer
of “La Marcha Nacional Filipina,” otherwise known
as the Himno Nacional Filipino, was born.”

“Was it a coincidence that this man who was

responsible for the composition of the national
anthem was born on the same year when the man
destined to be the national icon was also born?”

“Education played a very important part in the family Student 12: “Would this mean that 1861 was the onset
of Jose Rizal. His parents were remarkably educated. of the birth of reforms that would transform the

Philosophy at the Colegio of San Jose, Manila. His
mother, Doña Teodora Alonso Realonda, who grew
up in Manila was described as a remarkable woman.
She was educated at Colegio de Santa Rosa, a well-
known college for girls in the city. She possessed a
rare combination of literary and mathematical
intelligence. She knew literature well and she was
said to be a woman of refined culture who could
speak Spanish fluently.”

“It is not surprising why Jose Rizal put a big

premium on the value of education and a penchant for
literature as evidenced by his writings as early as
eight years old when he wrote his first poem titled ‘Sa
Aking Mga Kababata’.”

“Rizal’s life was short, but being the epitome of

multiple intelligences among his people, he had made
use of the eight realms of intelligence which made his Student 13: “Jose Rizal obviously inherited all the
life exceptionally fruitful.” qualities of his parents.”

“Aside from being polymath, Jose Rizal was also a

polyglot.”

“What is the difference between polymath and

polyglot?”

“Jose Rizal was an ophthalmologist, novelist,

sculptor, painter, educator, farmer, historian,
playwright, and journalist. He also possessed
expertise in varied fields such as architecture,
cartography, economics, ethnology, anthropology,
sociology, dramatics, martial arts, fencing and pistol Student 14: “Polymath is a person having wide-
shooting.” ranging knowledge of learning while polyglot is a
person knowing one or more language.”
“Jose Rizal was able to speak twenty-two (22)
languages including Spanish, French, Latin, Greek,
German, Portuguese, Italian, English, Deutch, and
Japanese. Rizal also made translations from Arabic,
Swedish, Russian, Chinese, Greek, Hebrew and
Sanskrit. He translated the poetry of Schiller into his
native Tagalog. In addition, he had at least some
knowledge of Malay, and some other Philippine
languages like Chabacano, Cebuano, Ilocano and
Subanon.

“The marriage of Francisco Mercado Rizal and

Teodora Alonso Realonda was blessed with how
many children?”

“These children were: First, Saturnina, she was the

eldest among the Rizal children who was nicknamed
Neneng. She studied in La Concordia College in Sta.
Ana, Manila. She married Manuel T. Hidalgo, a
native of Tanawan, Batangas.”

“Who is the second child of Francisco Mercado Rizal

and Teodora Alonso Realonda and that was the older Student 15: “They are blessed with eleven (11)
brother whom Jose Rizal called ‘Uto’?” children-nine (9) girls and two (2) boys.”

“Alright, Paciano also accompanied Rizal when he

enrolled in schools. Enraged by the Gomburza
execution and the sentiments of his younger brother (Students will see the image)
Jose, he joined the Philippine Revolution and became
a combat general. After the revolution, he had lived in
his farm in Los Baños and died an old bachelor at the
age of 79. He was survived by two children, a boy
and a girl by his mistress, Severina Decena.

school teacher of Morong. She married Antonio
Lopez, a nephew of Father Leoncio Lopez.

“Does anyone knows what is the nickname of (Students will see the image)
Narcisa?”

“Olimpia, she was the third among the children. She

married Silvestre Ubaldo, a telegraph operator from
Manila.”

“Lucia was the fifth the name of the fifth of the fifth
child of Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora

Christian burial because he was a brother-in-law of
Jose Rizal.”

“Maria, the sixth child. Her nickname was Biang. Student 17: “Sir, the nickname of Narcisa was Sisa; It

Me Tangere.”
“The seventh child of Francisco Mercado Rizal and
Teodora Alonso Realonda was our national hero, Jose
Rizal. (Students will see the image)

“What is the nickname of Jose Rizal?”

(Students will see the image)

“Who knows who Josephine Bracken is?”

“Jose Rizal had a son with her, who died a few hours
after he was born. Jose named his son ‘Francisco,’
after his father’s name.” (Students will see the image)

“There was also a rumor that Adolf Hitler and Mao

Zedong was illegitimate sons of Jose Rizal.”
(Students will see the image)
“The eighth child was Concepcion, her pet name was
Concha. She died when she was only three years old.
Her death brought grief to the whole family. That was
the first sorrow Jose Rizal had experienced.” Student 18: “The greatest Filipino hero and genius
was nicknamed Pepe.”
“Josefa, the ninth child. She was called Panggoy by
the family. She died an old maid at the age of 80.”
Student 19: “Jose Rizal had lived with her; she is an

Trining. Like her sister Josefa, Trining never married
and died an old maid at the age of 83.”

“Soledad, Choleng was her pet name and the

youngest among the eleven (11) children of the
couple Francisco and Teodora. She married Pantaleon
Quintero of Calamba.

“The Rizal family was big, yet the children had very
harmonious relationship. Family ties were strong and
the affections among the children were great. Their (Students will see the image)
parents loved them very much, but as children they
were never spoiled. In fact they were disciplinarians
especially when the children made wrong actions, or
got into mischievous things. Don Francisco and Doña
Teodora believed in the saying, ‘Spare the rod and
spoil the child’. They taught their children the values (Students will see the image)
of love to their fellowmen most especially love of
God, and to be honest and obedient They also trained
the children to be respectful to people, especially the
old folks.” (Students will see the image)

“The whole family heard mass every day in the town

church, particularly during Sundays and holidays.”

“What is the prayer that they have prayed together (Students will see the image)
every night before they went to bed?”

“Good. And all the children had been trained to kiss

the hands of their parents after the prayers.”

“Life, however, was not always prayers and church.

They were also allowed to play in their azoteas or in
the spacious yard, where they played themselves.

“The Rizals belonged to one of the affluent families

in Calamba. Through hard work and frugal living,
they were able to build a large stone house near the
town church, to buy another, to own a carriage which
was the status symbol of the ilustrados during the
Spanish time, to construct the biggest private library
in Calamba during that period, and to send the
children to colleges in Manila.”

“The family income gave them adequate and

comfortable life so they could lead social and
religious activities in the community.”

“What is hospitality?”

“Correct, their family also played as cordial and Student 20: “Angelus prayer and the Holy Rosary.”
hospitable hosts to all visitors and guest during the
town fiestas, holidays, and other celebrations in their
place. They entertained in their home all guests
irrespective or their color, rank, social and economic
status – friars, Spaniards, Filipinos, young and old
alike. Everybody was welcomed in their house
anytime.”

“We can see that Filipinos are exercising hospitality

even in the time of Jose Rizal.”

“Like all Filipinos, Jose Rizal was a descendant of

the Malayan race. His blood was a mixture of
Negrito, Indonesian, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish
genes.

“On his father side, Rizal’s great-great grandfather

was a Chinese from Fukien City of Changchow,
Domingo Lamco, a merchant who migrated to the
Philippines. He was converted to Christianity and
married a Christian girl, Ines dela Rosa. He assumed
the surname Mercado, a Spanish term which means
market and appropriate for him being a merchant.
Domingo Mercado and Ines dela Rosa’s union was
gifted with a son. They named him Francisco
Mercado who married a Chinese-Filipina mestiza,
Cirila Bernacha. The young couple settled in Biñan Student 21: “Friendly and generous reception of guest

grandfather. Juan married Cirila Alejandro, a Chinese
mestizo. He was also elected gobernadorcillo of
Biñan. Capitan Juan and Captana Cirila had thirteen
children; the youngest was Francisco Mercado, Jose
Rizal’s father.”

“Francisco Mercado’s father died when he was only

eight years old so he was left and grew up under the
care of his mother. He studied Latin and Philosophy
in the College of San Jose in Manila. While studying,
he met Teodora Alonso Realonda with whom he fell
in love and got married on June 28, 1848. The couple
settled down in Calamba. They engaged in farming in
a Dominican-owned hacienda where they reared a big
family.”

“It was believed that Doña Teodora’s family was a

descendant of the last native king of Tondo,
Lakandula.”

“For additional information, it was also said that

Tambobong or otherwise known today as Malabon
was part of Tondo before, under the leadership of
Rajah Lakandula.”

“Doña Teodora’s great grandfather was Eugenio

Ursua, of Japanese ancestry. He married a Filipina by
the name Benigna, surname unknown. The couple had
a daughter Regina, who married Manuel de Quintos, a
Filipino-Chinese lawyer from the province of
Pangasinan. One of the daughters of Attorney Quintos
and Regina was Brigida, Jose Rizal’s grandmother.
She married Lorenzo Alberto, a Spanish-Filipino
mestizo from Biñan. They had five (5) children:
Narcisa, Teodora (Rizal’s mother), Gregorio, Manuel,
and Jose. Teodora, being a daughter of a prominent
family studied in Manila where she met Francisco
Mercado.”
