Name Reynan S. Omongayon Year & Section OV 1-2 Score ____________

1. How would you describe Jose Rizal’s childhood in Calamba?

- Rizal’s childhood was far from children’s we have today – his life was peaceful
and free. Rizal grew up in a happy home with lot a of siblings that made his life
happier and was raised in a community where the people are very friendly,
respectful and hospitable that profoundly affected his mind and molded his
character. He was very intelligent; he learned to read letters at the age of three.
Despite of limited resources, Rizal learned a lot of things because of the
influence of his mother.

2. Did Rizal had a happy childhood? Explain.

- Yes, Rizal had a happy childhood because he had many joyful memories of his
childhood. He had a supportive family, impregnated with family joy. Rizal family’s
is quite well-off. They can afford to hire a tutor for Jose Rizal to learn. And best
of all, he has a very hospitable and friendly folks that has a remarkable impact
on his life.
3. Was there any manifestation of unusual intelligence on the part of
Rizal at a very young age? Cite examples.
- Yes, at early age Rizal has an interest in poetry, music, and European literature.
And when he turned four, the young Rizal can already recognize the martin, the
Maya, multi-colored kuliawan, and many others. Lastly, he surpassed everyone in
all subjects during his study in Binan. . Also it was stated in the book that the
young Rizal was a voracious reader, to the point that in the age of three he was
able to read.
4. How did Rizal gained inspiration from the story of the moth?
- According to the story of the moth told by his mother he learned that he should
not disobey his mother. If he does so, he will become like the moth that burned
its wings because it did not listen to its mother not to go near the flame.

5. Based on the poem, Sa Aking Mga Kabata, give your insights on how
the youth today profess their confidence and interest in their mother
tongue. Does the youth today still value their native tongue? Explain
your answer.
- Living in this year 2021, by observing on how people talk or interact with others,
I can say that we are not giving value to our mother tongue. I think the main
reason is the school influence the students to be more fluent in the English
language rather than Tagalog which is our native language.

6. Why did Rizal’s parents send him to Binan? What happened to him
when he studied in Binan?
- A 9-year old Rizal sent by his father to Biñan to continue study the Latin
language, because his first teacher had died. Under Maestro Justiniano Aquino
Cruz, Rizal was able to improve his Spanish and Latin. He followed a regular daily
routine, attended to his studies and excelled in them. This made him the best
student in school, surpassing everyone in all subjects. Besides taking formal
lesson in Latin and Spanish, Rizal availed himself of the services of a local painter
in order to improve his talent in the field. He soon became one of the best
painters of the school.

7. Why was the detention of Teodora Alonso considered cruel and

humiliating?
- The detention of Teodora Alonso was considered as cruel and humiliating
because, Teodora Alonso was accused on a crime she was incapable of doing.
She was also forced to walk almost 30 kilometers away and imprisoned for two
and a half years before finally released. Additionally, it is humiliating for it the
case was all fabrication.

8. How was Rizal affected by the Cavite Mutiny?

- Rizal was just eleven years old when he was told about events happened in
Cavite and knowing how intelligent Rizal was, he was frustrated and depressed.
As book says, he could not contain his frustration and depression when he was
told about the heroic story of the three priests or the Cavite Mutiny in general.
Project-based (Individual Thought Paper):

1. Song Analysis (from the Musical, “Sino Ka Ba Jose Rizal?” by Gary

Granada): Covering Rizal’s life from birth to early education in
Ateneo Municipal).
- Rizal has been too much deified and mythicized for so long that the question has
to be asked "Sino ka nga ba talaga?" Despite the Rizal course as a requirement
in Schools, the students are no wiser than before he embarked on the study.
Gary Granada's songs portray a very human Rizal with whom any Filipino can
identify and emulate. The song “Sino Ka Ba Jose Rizal?” is depicting the life
of Rizal when he was just a child up until he grew up and sacrificed himself for
his country. The melody and the beat of the song captures the heart of the
listener.
2. Write a short biographical essay that compares your early childhood
with Rizal’s own.
- My name is Reynan Omongayon, I grew up in Cadiz City. I have five siblings, I
have a 62-year old father which recently passed away. My mother worked as a
sugarcane farmer. Unlike Rizal, I grew up in a poor family where going to college
is no longer a right but a luxury. Despite of having limited resources, I found a
way to continue my study in college. I worked as part timer in PNUV where I get
the money I used in my daily expenses in school. I know, my story is a complete
opposite of Rizal’s life but I know someday with the perseverance and
determination, I can make a change to my country.
