As part of their course curriculum, the 3rd year UST BSMA Students had undergone plant tours which
are directly in line with their soon to be profession as managerial accountants. The said tours were
conducted at Laguna International Industrial Park Mamplasan, Biñan Laguna, where the Gardenia
Bakery Plant and Gonuts Donuts plantation are located. As we were brought there for a tour to learn
first-hand on how their products are processed and manufactured, we, students, have witnessed superb
teamwork and different problem-solving techniques applied every day by these two different company.
They, too, had also demonstrated to us how their skilled workers operate with high-tech equipments
and how they monitor their own productivity and quality as well.

Having experienced this educational tour, I believe that BSMA Students like me have a better
understanding on how managing resources, operations, activities, and people play a pivotal role in the
success of an organization – which may not need to be a manufacturing industry. This is where the role
of managerial accountants takes place. As they seek to create value for the organization by managing its
resources, activities and people, they play an integral role in achieving the organization’s goals
effectively.

It has been said how the role of managerial accountants had evolved nowadays - from being physically
separated from the managers for whom they provided reports and information, to being actually
located in the operating departments where they are working side-by-side with other managers to make
economic decisions and resolve operational problems. By undergoing this tour, it has been easier for
me to learn and understand the future profession that is waiting for me 1-2 years from now. Also, seeing
the actual process and activities of manufacturing, processing and delivering of goods have definitely
made it easier for me to comprehend with our present lectures right now regarding cost accounting. To
sum it all up, the plant visits have been a very useful tool for BSMA students like me to take a better
grasp regarding their present course and future profession.
