PSALM 84 (PART II): DESIRE FOR THE HOUSE OF GOD

In the last study we saw this psalm applied to the dwelling
place of God in Heaven; where the Church Triumphant is
gathered. That is the ultimate desire of the Christian. It is a
happy truth however that until we reach that rest the
Church Militant is privileged with the Spirit of Immanuel
here on earth. We can enjoy the presence of the Lord in
that place where God specifically dwells on earth - the
assembly of the saints (Matthew 18:20 cf. Hebrews 10:25).
The use of the phrase "Lord of Hosts" (V’s. 1, 3, 8, 12)
draws attention to the people gathered together; the Lord
who marshals and guides His people. There are others then
referred to throughout the Psalm.

1. Those who desire to be in the House of God

(1-3)
Here he speaks of himself "pining" (soul longing) for the
house of God. From which he has been exiled (perhaps
David writes this during Absalom`s rebellion as some
commentators think see also Ps. 63). But he longs to be
where the Lord dwells even if it means with those who have
hurt him and desire his downfall. These are not his reasons
for coming to the house of God, nor his focus; it is the living
God. Organised religion has hurt many souls, but those who
desire the presence of Christ can endure much for his sake.

2. Those who "dwell" in the house of God (4)

The psalmist briefly mentions those who "dwell" where he
longs to be. No hint of resentment (Numbers 16:3), but
recognition of their happy condition and occupation of
praise.

3. Those who determine to be in the house of

God (Vs. 5-8)
Those who sacrifice to be at the house of God are blessed.
The effort and energy exerted does not weary but advances
them (Vs. 7 “strength to strength”) who are determined to
meet with God, even through the many difficulties that life
brings in this “valley of tears.”

4. Those who delight in the House of God (Vs.

9-12)
This seems to be a corporate prayer for the anointed of God
(perhaps David). One day “standing at the threshold” (AV
“doorkeeper”) of the Lord’s house is better than a thousand
elsewhere because the Lord will not withhold good from his
people.
