Eid ul Fitr

Muslims worldwide celebrate Eid ul fitr or the festival for the conclusion of the fast on the first day of
the month of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar. This Islamic holiday honors the end of the ritual fasting
which takes place in the month of Ramadan. Eid ul fitr begins with the eid prayer which is offered in
congregation. This is a very special occasion and everyone is expected to wear their best clothing. This
day is used to celebrate with family and community. Food is offered and shared with everyone and
children are given sweets and gifts.

Eid ul Adha

Eid ul adha which means festival of sacrifice is celebrated in remembrance of Prophet Abraham’s
willingness to forego his son Ishmael in reverence of his devotion to Allah. However, instead of
sacrificing Ishmael, Prophet Abraham was allowed to sacrifice a small animal in his sons place. Eid ul
Adha like Eid ul Fitr is commemorated with the Eid prayer. In addition, an animal is sacrificed in honor
of Prophet Abraham’s dedication to his creator. Eid ul Adha takes place on the tenth of Dhul Hijjah and
coincides with the ending of the rituals for Hajj or pilgrimage.
