transmitter within a single cell must be limited to reduce the interference with the neighboring cells. Advantages of GSM • Capacity increases • Reduced RF transmission power and longer battery life. • International roaming capability. • Better security against fraud (through terminal validation and user authentication). • Encryption capability for information security and privacy. • Compatibility with ISDN,leading to wider range of services What is GPRS ? • General packet radio service (GPRS) is a standard from the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) on packet data in GSM systems. GPRS has also been accepted by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) as the packet-data standard for TDMA/136 systems. By adding GPRS functionality to the public land mobile network (PLMN), operators can give their subscribers resource-efficient access to external Internet protocol-based (IP) networks. GENERAL PACKET RADIO SERVICES • GPRS introduces two new network nodes in the GSM PLMN: • The Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), • which is at the same hierarchical level as the MSC, keeps track of the individual MSs’ • location and performs security functions and access control. • The Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) • provides inter working with external packet-switched networks, and is connected with • SGSNs via an IP-based GPRS backbone network. • The HLR is enhanced with GPRS subscriber information.
