What is Modem ???
A modem is a composite word that refers to two functional entities
that make up the device : a signal modulator and a signal
Demodulator.

Conversion of binary data to analog signal is called modulation.

Conversion of analog signal back to binary data is called

demodulation.
Modem Connection

DTE(Data terminal Equipment): End instrument that serves as data source

or receiver.
DCE(Data carrier Equipment): Device that sits between DTE and netwok
Modem Classification :
 Operation Mode
Simplex
Half-duplex
Full-duplex

 Synchronization
Asynchronous
Synchronous
Classifying Modems according to :
Operation Mode

SIMPLEX:

1. Simplex means that signals can be passed in one direction only.

2. Example :- A remote modem for a telemetering system might be

simplex.
HALF-DUPLEX MODEM :
1. A half-duplex modem must alternately send and receive signals.

- Allows more of Channel bandwidth

- Slows data communication

FULL-DUPLEX MODEM :
1. A Full-duplex modem can simultaneously transmit and
receive
signals.

2. Each signal uses half of the bandwidth available to it.
