Questions

1. Colligative properties are properties that depend of the amount of a

substance and not the actual substance itself. This lab illustrates a
colligative property because as the amount of anti freeze increases the
boiling point of the solution is increased.
2. The relationship of the boiling point and the increase in concentration is
direct so as one goes up the other also increases.
3. The title of the lab is appropriate because the presence of more antifreeze
makes it harder for the substance to evaporate so in essence it is an “anti
boil”
4. Antifreeze is used in a car’s engine in order to prevent the engine from
over heating and freezing. It does this by adding antifreeze which
decreases the freezing point and increases the boiling point increasing
the range the temperature of the engine can be and this restricting the
freezing and overheating of the engine only to extreme temperatures.
5. Salt is added to icy sidewalks because of the colligative property in
lowering the freezing point of the water. With the freezing point being
lowered to lower than the temperature of the environment the ice turns
in salt water and eliminates the dangerous icy sidewalks.

Summary

Adding a solute to a solvent has 3 effects on the overall solution by increasing

boiling point, decreasing freezing point, and decreasing vapor pressure. My lab
supports this by when the solute of antifreeze is added to the solvent of water the
boiling point increases as seen in the data. My lab was successful because it
illustrated the colligative property correctly. Some sources of error are human
measurement and not having misreadings.
