Corus Engineering Steels

16MnCr5 ‘IM’ / 16MnCrS5 ‘IM’

An improved machining, inclusion modified low carbon alloy steel

suitable for case carburising.
Features Benefits
• Calcium treated steel for Inclusion modification The modified inclusions are less abrasive to cutting
• Contains soft, deformable calcium aluminates tools, acting as a lubricant and barrier at the tool /
encapsulated in manganese sulphide rather than workpiece interface.
hard alumina oxide inclusions
• Tightly controlled hardenability Compared with the standard grade the IM steel gives:
• Controlled analysis for repeatable strength and
fatigue properties • Improved machinability with reduced machining cost
• Grain size 5 or finer • Up to 30% longer tool life for a given cutting speed
• Up to 20% higher cutting speeds for a given tool life
