WHAT IS A PREPOSITION?

A PREPOSITION is a word used before noun:


a member of a set of words used in close
connection with, and usually before, nouns and
pronouns to show their relation to another part of a
clause.
WHAT IS AN IDIOM?

id·i·om [íddee əm]
(plural id·i·oms) noun

An IDIOM is a fixed expression with non literal


meaning: a fixed distinctive expression whose
meaning cannot be deduced from the combined
meanings of its actual words.
WHAI IS A PREPOSITIONAL IDIOM?

A prepositional idiom is consist of a verb followed by a


preposition, but unlike an ordinary prepositional phrase, it forms
an expression with a non-literal or idiomatic meaning. Some
grammarians consider the prepositional idiom a type of
a phrasal verb, others call it the phrasal verb itself, and still
others call it a verb phrase.
EXAMPLES:

• at one's disposal :  available for one’s use


• at fault :  causing a problem or accident
• at first :  in the beginning
• at last :  finally, after some delay
• at a loss :  unsure of what to do or say; speechless
EXAMPLES:

• behind the scenes :  influencing events secretly; unseen

Beside
• beside the point :  irrelevant

• by accident:  not on purpose
• by all means :  by any possible method
• by hand:   without the use of machinery
• by heart :  from memory
• by mistake :  accidentally
• by oneself :  alone
• by the way :  incidentally

• for a living :  as a profession
• for one thing :  because of one reason
• for a while :  for a period of time
• for sure :  definitely
