What is a preposition ?
A preposition links nouns , pronouns and phrases to
other words in a sentence. The word or phrase that
preposition introduces is called the object of the
preposition. A preposition usually indicates the
temporal, spatial or logical relationship of its object
to the rest of the sentence.


Here are the most commonly used
prepositions:
Aboard, about, above, across, after, against, along,
among, around, as, at, before, behind below,
beneath, beside, between, beyond, but, by,
concerning, despite, down , during, except, for,
from, in, inside, into, like, near, of, off, on, onto,
opposite, out outside, over past, since , through,
throughout, till, to, toward, under, underneath,
until , up, upon, with within, without.

USES AND FUNCTIONS OF
PREPOSITIONS
Serves to link two words or other elements in the
sentence:
The man swam under the bridge.
They can accompany a verb serving to bind to its
complement and alter it and create a different word.
To look /
To look after / take care of.
When we put a verb after a preposition, in English
how 'ing' is commonly used, not the infinitive.
You shouldnt go to India without visiting the Taj Mahal.

Kinds of Prepositions are of five different kinds:

1. Simple prepositions.
2. Compound prepositions.
3. Double prepositions.
4. Participle prepositions.
5. Phrase prepositions.
6. Prepositions and adverbs.





Simple Prepositions

are words like in, on, at, about, over, under, off, of, for, to etc.

* She sat on the sofa.
* He is going to the market.

Compound prepositions

are words like without, within, inside, outside, into, beneath,
below, behind, between etc.

* He fell into the river.
* He sat beside her.

Double prepositions

are words like outside of, out of, from behind, from beneath etc.

* Suddenly he emerged from behind the curtain.
* He walked out of the compound.
Participle prepositions

Participle prepositions are words like concerning, notwithstanding,
pending, considering etc.
There was little chance of success, notwithstanding they decided to
go ahead.
You did the job well, considering your age and inexperience.

Phrase prepositions

Phrase prepositions are phrases like because of, by means of, with
regard to, on behalf of, instead of, on account of, in opposition to,
for the sake of etc.

I am standing here on behalf of my friends and colleagues.
The match was cancelled because of the rain.
He succeeded by means of perseverance.

Prepositions and Adverbs

The difference between a preposition and an adverb is that an
adverb answers the questions, Where? When? How? To what
extent? By itself. Both common and compound prepositions need
more than just themselves to answer the same questions:

He fell down.
He fell down the stairs.

They walked aboard.
They walked aboard the ship.
