COMMUNICATION THROUGH

ELECTRONIC CHANNELS
Communication
Communication is the activity of
conveying information.
Communication requires a
sender, a message, and an
intended recipient, although the
receiver need not be present or
aware of the sender's intent to
communicate at the time of
communication
• Thus communication can occur
across vast distances in time and
space.
Communication Cycle

•The first major model

for communication came
in 1949 by Claude
Shannon and Warren
Weaver for Bell
Laboratories

•The Sender-Message-
Channel-Receiver
Model of
Communication Cycle consists of –

• An information source, which produces a message.

• A transmitter, which encodes the message into signals
• A channel, to which signals are adapted for transmission
• A receiver, which 'decodes' (reconstructs) the message
from the signal.
• A destination, where the message arrives.
the Communication Channels

• A channel is used to convey an information or signal, that is destined to

communicate from one person to the other
e.g. Digital Bit stream

• The channels communicate the information from one or several senders

(or transmitters) to one or several receivers.

• A channel has a certain capacity for transmitting information, often

measured by its bandwidth in Hz or its data rate in bits per second .

• The beginning of human communication through artificial channels, i.e.

not vocalization or gestures, goes back to ancient cave paintings, drawn
maps, and writing.
History of communication
channels….
Dominant communication medium divides history into the following stages:
(i) IDEOGRAPHIC WRITING produced the first civilization, the alphabetic writing,
(ii) The second PRINTING .
(iii) The third ELECTRONIC Recording and Broadcasting,
(iv) The fourth and COMPUTER COMMUNICATION,
(v) The fifth MOBILE DEVICES, involves ad-hoc organization through, allowing for
effective many-to-many communication and SOCIAL NETWORKING.

“The last 3 categories are grouped

together as Electronic channels “
The Telecommunication
• A revolution in telecommunications provide new media for long
distance communication.
• Analog telecommunications include traditional telephony, radio and
TV broadcasts.
• Digital telecommunications allow for
computer-mediated communication, wireless communication
technology and computer networks.
The Technologies
FAX
– While there is a lot of
attention focussed on
using computers to
send and receive
documents, the stand-
alone fax machine is
an important
electronic
communication
TELEPHONE
• Telephone Technology for small
Businesses
– Sophisticated Multiplex telephone-
systems capable of supporting many
lines and advanced features are
often expensive and therefore out of
reach for many small businesses.
• Three Way Calling
– Three-way calling allows you to link
three people into one conversation
– . It saves time by exchanging
information with more than one
person concurrently.

• Toll Free Calling services
– Providing your clients with access to a toll-free number tells
them that you are ready to do business regardless of where they
are located
– This type of service can be very beneficial if a significant
number of your clients and business associates are located
outside your local area.
PAGERS
• Pagers
– These are smaller, provide
better coverage and
provide increased
flexibility.
– A pager is especially
practical if you have
employees who are always
on the go.
– Some firms use pagers to
Wireless Communication Tools
• Cellular Phones –
– Cellular telephones are an excellent tool that provide you
with mobility, accessibility and flexibility.
– Cellular telephones also enables clients to maintain contact
without having to dial several numbers. This makes you
more accessible
– Short Messaging Service is another channel of
communication which is faster, reliable and prevents the
loss of data which can occur in voice calls
– Value Added Services are provided by cellular service
providers which help to navigate, check travel status etc.
WIRELESS EMAIL
• Wireless email
– If e-mail is essential and you spend a lot of time on
the road, wireless technology enables e-mail
access when you are away from the phone.
– This technology allows you to check your mail
from a parked car, hotel room or even while on the
beach!
Mobile phones
Mobile phones mark up a new era for
communication technology . Now a days the 3
–G services are also found which have
changed the face of mass communication very
strongly . Nobody is nowhere alone in this
world …
Few examples of usage of mobile phones in
our life
Radio
• Although its business uses are limited, radio is
an effective means of broadcasting information
to many people at once
• Radio and other forms of mass communication
do not allow for convenient, prompt feedback.
• The most common business use of radio is for
advertising, primarily at the local level.
• The advantages of radio are that it is a
relatively inexpensive medium for both sender
and receiver, and messages may be prerecorded
for a later broadcast.
• The disadvantages are the absence of a
convenient means of feedback and more
attention is paid to information chanelled
through other tools of electronic
communication.
Television
• Television, another of the mass media, is also an effective means
of broadcasting information to many people at once.
• . Because it combines auditory and visual images, TV provides a
fairly effective substitute for face-to-face communication when
time, distance, or cost of travel would make face-to-face
communication difficult.
• The advantages of television—video—are that it combines both
audio and visual information in a way that approximates face-to-
face communication
• Messages may be prerecorded and checked to ensure that they
communicate the intended message before delivery at a later time.
• The principal disadvantage of television is that it is expensive,
especially when it is done well.
• Recording and broadcasting equipment are expensive. Recording,
duplicating, and distributing videotapes (or DVD disks) is also
expensive,
• Broadcast quality video requires good cameras, trained operators,
and usually a trained producer. Those who will be on camera require
sufficient training
Emails
• Email has recently become the most common form of business
communication, substituting for letters, memos, and many
telephone calls.
• The advantages of email are that it is both quick and convenient. It
can be printed, saved electronically, or forwarded to multiple
recipients.
• Email provides enhanced features; such as file attachments, Rich
Text Format, and delivery confirmation etc., which is otherwise
not possible when sending a normal letter.

• Email Lists simplify the process of exchanging information with

groups of people who share common interests.
• The disadvantages of email are that because speed often seems
more important than correctness, email messages often contain
egregious errors in spelling, grammar, mechanics and content
Computer Telephone Integration
• Computer-Telephone Integration is another new
and emerging technology which combines
computers, conventional telephone sets, and the
Internet through the use of special software.
• It includes the following channels-
• Audio conferencing
• Videoconferencing
• Web conferencing
• Social Networking
Web conferencing
The web conferencing is the most common
method for holding the meeting now a days .
This is as effective as talking face to face but
involves the freedom from hustle of travelling.
Social networking sites
• Social networking
sites are a new hub of
social interaction
between people .
Various sites like
facebook , twitter
and orkut are most
popular ones among
many.
