1. Given that log 2 = r and log 3 = s , express the following in terms of r and s:

(a) log 18 , (b) log 15 . [CE 88]

log(a 2 ) + log(b 4 )
2. Simplify , where a, b>0. [CE 90]
log(ab 2 )

3. If log x = p and log y = q, express log(xy) in terms of p and q. [CE 92]

4. If log 2 = x and log 3 = y , express log 12 in terms of x and y. [CE 94]

5. Solve log x + 2 log 4 = log 48 without using a calculator. [CE 95]

log 8 + log 4
6. Simplify . [CE 97]
log 16

7. It is given that y = abx. The graph of log y against x in

each of the following is a straight line shown in the graph.

Find a and b correct to 3 significant figures if necessary.

8. (a) An earthquake has a Richter scale of 6.2. Three hours later, the second earthquake is recorded,

its intensity is 1/30 of the previous one. Find the Richter scale of the second earthquake.

Correct the answer to 1 decimal place.

(b) At the same time, two places A and B recorded an earthquake of Richter scale of 5.6 and 6.8

respectively. What is the ratio of intensity of the earthquake in A to that in B?

(Correct the answer to 3 significant figures).
