General Instructions:
i. The question paper comprises two sections - A and B. There are 18 questions in the question paper. All
questions are compulsory.
ii. Section - A - Question Nos. 1 to 8 - all questions and their subparts carry one mark each. These questions
contain Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), very short answer questions and Assertion-Reason type
questions. Question Nos. 7 and 8 are case-study based questions which have 5 sub-parts. Attempt any 4
out of the 5 subparts.
iii. Section - B - Question Nos. 9 to 13 are very short answer type questions, carrying 2 marks each. Answers
to these questions should be in about 30 to 50 words each.
iv. Section - B - Question Nos. 14 and 15 are short answer type question, carrying 3 marks. The answers to
these questions should be in about 50 to 80 words each.
v. Section - B - Question No. 16 is a long answer type question, carrying 5 marks. The answer to this
question should be in about 80 to 120 words.
vi. There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some questions. Attempt
only one of the alternatives in such questions.
vii. Use of calculators is not permitted.

7. Read the passage given and answer the questions that follow: [1X4=4]

When two progressive waves of equal amplitude and frequency travelling in opposite directions along a straight line,
superpose each other, the resultant wave does not travel in either direction and is called a stationary or standing wave.
At some points, the particles of the medium always remain at rest. These are called as nodes. At some other points,
the amplitude of oscillation is maximum. These are called antinodes.

A stress-strain graph for a metal wire of length ‘L’ and radius ‘r’ is shown in the figure below. Up to the point E,
the wire returns to its original state O along the curve EPO when it is gradually unloaded. Point B corresponds to
the fracture of the wire.

(a) Why is frequency the most fundamental property of a wave?
(b) The frequencies of two tuning forks A and B are 250 Hz & 254 Hz respectively. If both are sounded together,
how many beats will be heard in 5 seconds?

10. (a) In the figure given below, a slab of ice and a metallic wire are attached with heavy blocks on both sides. It was
observed that the wire gradually penetrates and passes through the ice slab. What is this phenomenon called?

(b) Show that the Kelvin and Fahrenheit readings have the same numerical value of temperature at 574 degrees.

11. (a) A shirt containing greasy stains when soaked in water doesn’t remove the stains but on adding detergents to

12. (a) When the displacement is two-third of the amplitude, what fraction of the total energy will be kinetic energy
and what fraction will be potential energy, in SHM?
(b) What do you understand by the term harmonic oscillator? [2]

13. (a) State the Law of Equipartition of energy of a dynamic system.


(b) What are the values of degrees of freedom and internal energy in the case of a monatomic gas and a diatomic
gas (not vibrating)? [2]

14. Answer the following questions :
(a) State the name and purpose of using the apparatus shown in the figure below. Support your answer by
explaining the principle and equation it is linked with.

(b) Find the terminal velocity of a steel ball, 2 mm in diameter, falling through glycerin. Relative density of
Steel = 8, relative density of glycerin = 1.3 and viscosity of glycerin = 0.83 Pa.s [3]

15. Figure (a) & (b), show the setups of two systems. In the first setup [figure (a)], A and B are separated by an
adiabatic wall and also each is in contact with a third system C, via a conducting wall. However, in the second
setup [figure (b)], the adiabatic wall between A and B is replaced by a conducting wall and C is insulated from A
and B by an adiabatic wall.

(a) Explain the observations in both the setups.


(b) How does this lead to the concept of temperature? Support your answer by stating the law associated with
such a situation. [3]

What is an isothermal process? Derive an expression for the work done during an adiabatic process.

16. (a) For a simple harmonic motion of time period ‘T’, plot the displacement, velocity and acceleration, graphically.
Derive the relations of velocity and acceleration to support your answer.
(b) Distinguish between free and damped oscillations with the help of illustrations.
(c) A particle of mass 10 g is placed in a potential field given by U = 50 +100 x2 erg/gram. Calculate the frequency
of oscillation. (1erg = 10‒7 Joules). [5]

(a) Derive the expression for the time period of a simple pendulum in motion.
(b) If the acceleration due to gravity of a planet is one-sixth of that on moon, what will be the length and
the time period of a second’s pendulum there? (acceleration due to gravity on earth, g = 9.8m/s2)
(c) A block of mass ‘m’ is connected to 4 springs, as shown in the figure given below. Find out the force
constant of the system.
