Question 2.
The following function is defined for integer n:

f (n)  f (n  1)  f (n  2)  n

i) By replacing n with n-1 in the recursion above, find a recursive formula for f(n) in
terms of f(n-3) and n. (2 marks)
answer:

ii) Given that f(1)=f(2)=1, explain whether you can find the exact value of f(2021) ?
If so, find the value; if not, explain your reasons carefully. (3 marks)

Given also the following functions defined on the domain of integers :

p( x)  x  2

q( x)  2 x  1

s ( x, y , z )  
y ,ifx 0
z ,ifx0

Let g be a function defined , for all integers n and b, as follows,

g(n,b)=s(b,q(g(n-1,b)), p(g(n,b+1))), for b≠0;
g(n,0)=1, for b=0.
Note that g(1,b)=2, for a negative b; and g(1,b)=1/2 for a positive b.

(v) Give a simple formula in terms of n for the value of g(n,k) for all integers n and k,
where k is positive. And explain why this formula is correct. (5 marks)

Question 3.
Broken Bar: A bar is broken in two places, chosen uniformly and independently along
its length. What is the probability that the 3 pieces can be used to make a triangle?

(i) Assuming y>x, list the length of the three pieces. (1 marks)

(ii) What are the inequalities they should satisfy? (hint: what does the sum of
two sides of a triangle need to satisfy?) (3 marks)

(iii) Draw the diagram and shade the region specified by the above inequalities.

(iv) Now consider the case when x>y, and draw it on the same diagram. (3
marks)
(v) Hence find the probability that the 3 pieces can be used to make a triangle.
