Assignment Two

A. Design of Overflow portion part of gravity dam.

Given: -

Discharge (Q) = 9000m3/s

Surcharge head (Hd) = 10m

Bay length = 10m

Number of bays = 6

Pier thickness = 2.5m

Spillway crest level RL = 204m

River bed level RL= 100m

Solution

Number of piers (N) = 5

For Round shaped Kp = 0.01 ,Ka = 0.1

Effective length ¿=L−2∗( NKp + Ka )∗He

Assume He = 17.7m
¿=6∗10−2∗( 5∗0.01+ 0.1 )∗17.7 = 54.69m

But we have Q = cLeHe3/2

9000 = 2.2*57* He3/2

He = 17.74m

Hence the assumed value of He approaches to the calculated value.

Q 9000
Va= = =1 . 02 m/ se
Velocity approach ( L+NT )(RL+He (60+5∗2. 5 )(104+17 . 74 )
2 2
Va 1 .02
Ha= = =0 .05 m
Velocity Head 2 g 2∗9 . 81 which is very small.

B. Velocity distribution calculation

Downstream 0.7H: 1V
For downstream profile and vertical upstream face equation is given as
n
X = K* H d n−1 *Y
But for the spillway with vertical or optimally vertical
Upstream face, the value of
K = 2.00, n = 1.85

H d = 10m
n n-1 0.85
Hence, X = k*H d X 1.85 = 2* (10) * Y = 14.16Y
X 1. 85
Y=
14 . 16
