There are several web sites that teacher can use in their classroom. However
because of the many dangers on the web many of these sites are blocked. Twitter is
a microblogging site that could be a great resource in the classroom; however, it is
blocked in the county I work in, Bartow County. Bartow County is a school system
in Northwest Georgia, located due north of Cobb County. I work at Cass High School
in Bartow County. Cass High School consists of a majority of Caucasians, and about
ten percent minority. There is also a large majority of students who are
economically challenged according to the statistics that constitute Adequate Yearly
Progress (AYP).

The process of getting a website unblocked in the Bartow County school system is a
very simple process. Simply open up your web browser and type the web address
in the address bar. Your browser will then take you to a web site saying the site you
are tying to reach is blocked. In this case it will say www.twitter.com is blocked
because it is a social networking site. On this page there will be a link to contact
your system administrator to submit this page for review. Once you click this link
an email to Eric Guthrie the Network Specialist. In your email to Mr. Guthrie you will
need to explain how you plan on using this site in your classroom as an educational
tool. He then will review the information, the teacher acceptable use policy and the
student acceptable use policy to see if the website should be unblocked. If he deems
the website is suitable for use he will unblock the site, if not he will tell you why it
cannot be unblocked.
