Good morning,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

First of all I would like to thank navodaya vidyalaya samiti for giving us opportunity to present
our view about the latest concerns around the world I would like to share my views about
global warming.

Global warming, a study by scientists at the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that
154,000 people die every year from the effects of global warming. These numbers could almost
double by 2020.

Now What is global warming?

Global warming in an overall increase in world temperatures which may be caused by

additional heat being trapped by greenhouse gases.it is affecting many parts of the world.

A few notable effects are:

1. Effects on ocean level: IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) found that,

on average, mountain glaciers and snow cover had decreased in both the northern and
southern hemispheres. This widespread decrease in glaciers and ice caps has
contributed to observed sea level rise. The rate of rise is now 12 inches per century and
increasing. The IPCC projected in its 2007 report a sea level up to 2 feet higher by 2100
posing threat to the low lying areas.
2. Effects on weather: Increasing temperature will create the imbalance in the seasons like
either very less rainfall or very heavy rainfall this will lead to increased areas getting
affected by drought and floods. We can see the impact in our surrounding our elders
they might have seen proper rainfall in the month of January and august. Now how
much rainfall is happening in these months this year’s probably once or twice in month
of Jan- Feb. in comparison to that of 10-15 days that used to happen 10 years back.
3. Effects on ecosystem: reports states that due to increase in ocean water temp. The
growth of algae is decreasing day by day this algae is the food for the small fish due to
scarcity of algae the amount of small fish will decrease hence affecting the population of
bigger fish and other sea creature which rely on small fishes and algae. In land due to
effects o weather system it can hamper the food and shelter need of the animals that
includes man also.

In addition to these there are numerous indirect effects of global warming that can cause havoc
to human mankind.

What is the Cause behind all this:

Now many things cause global warming a few of them are.

The major cause of global warming is the emission of green house gases like carbon dioxide,
methane, nitrous oxide etc into the atmosphere. The major source of carbon dioxide is the
power plants. These power plants emit large amounts of carbon dioxide produced from burning
of fossil fuels for the purpose of electricity generation. About twenty percent of carbon dioxide
emitted in the atmosphere comes from burning of gasoline in the engines of the vehicles. This is
true for most of the developed countries

Deforestation: the more deforestation by the human added more to the situation as trees uses
carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Thus creating a balance but as the mankind is doing lot of
deforestation this balance is starting to tumble.

Use of fertilizers in soil: The "green revolution" of the twentieth century has allowed the
farmers of the world to use chemical fertilizers and machines to produce far more food than
they ever did before. One of the primary components of the green revolution has been the
development of nitrogen fertilizers that dramatically accelerate the growth and productivity of
plants in the field. in the world combined. Nitrogen oxides have 300 times more heat-trapping
capacity per unit of volume than carbon dioxide, and we release them every time we apply
fertilizer to soil. A recent United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization study found that
modern farming is contributing more to global warming than all of the transportation sector
combined.

3. Solution

As an individual, we can do many things to try to stop global warming.  One thing we can do is
carpooling.  Carpooling is driving with someone to a place that you are both going to.  This
minimizes the amount of greenhouse gases put into the air by a car. Planting trees and
recycling also helps.  If you recycle, less trash goes to the dump, and less trash gets burned.  As
a result, there are fewer greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere. Watch what you buy.  Many
things, such as hairspray and deodorant, now are made to have less of an impact on the
atmosphere.  Less greenhouse gasses will rise into the air, and global warming will slow down.

It easy to paint a dark picture of the future. Tough choices to be made between continued
global warming or fundamentally changing our lifestyle.

Al Gore story on how global warming can sneak up on us.  Addressing the National Academy of
Sciences, the vice president of America said, “If dropped into a pot of boiling water, a frog will
quickly jump out.  But if the same frog is put into a pot and the water is slowly heated, the frog
will stay put until boiled alive.  So it is with pollution.” If we do not wake up to the slow heating
of our environment, we may jump too late.”  The more we know about global warming, the
more likely we are to jump and the less likely we are to be cooked.
