Paiche

The Amazon King comes to America

The Latin Name is “Arapaimia gigas” or Brazilian name is “Pirarucu” and the Peruvian name
we use is “Paiche”. This air breathing exotic fish is, according to many “the best tasting fish I
have ever put in my mouth”

They are called the “King of the Amazon” because they rule the world's largest river. The
Amazon river is the largest fresh water river in the world with the most diverse array of wildlife
and fish on the planet. Reports have them growing to 16 feet in length and over 400 pounds
making them the worlds largest fresh water fish.

This prehistoric fish has been on the Amazon Endangered list for twenty year because it is easily
poached and because it is “the Amazon Delicacy”. In Peru and Brazil the military has guarded
the breeding grounds and chased poachers for years.

The New Breeding programs started in the 1990's and continue today. Today, governments are
limiting the size of fish caught. The governments along the Amazon have developed research
and funding programs to allow the growth and preservation through fish farming.

“Sustainable Aquaculture Programs” that are allowing exportation to Japan, Europe and the
world. In the next ten years we believe most US fine dining restaurants will have Paiche on their
menus.
