Thinking Critically to Evaluate Written Material

1. What is the definition of thinking critically?

It means thinking in an organized way about material that you have read in order

to evaluate it accurately.

2. Why is it important to be able to think critically?

It goes beyond basic comprehension by determining point of view, purpose,

intended audience, and tone.

Facts and Opinions

1. What is the definition of a fact?

A fact is something that can be proved to exist or have happened.

2. What is the definition of an opinion?

An opinion is a judgment or belief that cannot be proved or disproved.

3. List in order the three questions you should ask yourself in order to distinguish

between facts and opinions.

Can the information in the statement be proved?

Can the information in the statement be disproved?

Is the information in the statement something that cannot be proved or

disproved?
Opinions

1. List at least five words of phrases that authors use to indicate that they are

presenting an opinion.

Perhaps, it seems, it appears, presumably, and apparently.

2. List at least five value judgment words that indicate an opinion is being

presented.

Best, worst, excellent, interesting, and beautiful.

Making Logical Inferences

1. What is an inference?

It is a logical conclusion based on what an author states directly but also what

the author suggests or implies.

2. Why is it not an inference if a reader simply copies or paraphrases information

that the author states?

Inferences go beyond what an author has stated directly, but they must always

be based on the information the author presents.

Things to Keep In Mind When Thinking Critically

List the three additional things you should keep in mind when thinking critically

1. Facts and opinions may or may not appear together.

2. Authors sometimes present opinions in such a way that they appear to be facts.

3. Other critical thinking skills, such as recognizing propaganda devices and

recognizing fallacies can also be used to evaluate written material.
