of 143 years. Established in 1867, the company
today is a distinguished corporate entity with an

Kolkata, the company has significant trans-

Balmer Lawrie (UAE) IIc in Dubai and a
subsidiary, Balmer Lawrie (UK) plc. in UK. The

Set up as a partnership firm on 1st February 1867

based on a Partnership indenture between Mr.
Alexander Lawrie & Mr. S. G. Balmer, the company became a private limited company in 1924 and
later converted into a public limited company in 1936. In 1972, Balmer Lawrie became a Government
of India Enterprise under the ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India.

Manufacturing of Greases & Lubricants forms one of the core
businesses of the company. Starting the marketing activities almost a
century ago, the company forayed into manufacturing in 1937, by
pioneering manufacture of Grease in India. Today, the “BALMEROL”
brand is synonymous with superior performance, respect & trust.

Centralized R&D –
The company has a very sophisticated Research &
Development facility for lubricants at Kolkata. The R&D
facility is equipped with a host of sophisticated equipment
and instruments which include –
• Scanning Electron Microscope
• FZG Tester
• SRV Tester
• High Frequency Friction and Wear Tester
• Particle Size Analyzer
• Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer
• Thermal Analyzer
• Chromatography Equipment

The R&D Centre has currently

installed a Scanning Electron
Microscope in the laboratory,
which to the best of our
knowledge is the first such
installation for R&D in greases,
lubricants and specialities in the country. The above sophisticated
facilities are extensively
used both for the purpose of development and for maintaining
quality checks in the range of products manufactured.

Servicing expertise –
The manufacturing and R&D set up is backed by a service
expertise built up through years of providing exacting service
to the core industries. Competent service personnel are
available at all major locations in the country.

Industry associations –
The company has very close association with various bodies engaged in
development and testing of lubricants. These include:

Steel Authority of India Ltd. - Research and Development centre
for Iron and Steel

Indian Institute of Petroleum

Research and Development Standard Organization -Indian
Railway and are in regular touch as maintained with these bodies and
the test facilities available with them are accessed. Whenever
warranted, services of test laboratories abroad are also availed.

The company is rich in knowledge in all aspects of lubrication engineering. The rich human resource
comprising personnel with many years of experience in industry and several highly qualified
scientists provide a mix of balanced human resource.
