REAL-TIME VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

ABSTRACT
A common method for real time moving object detection in image sequences is
background removal, also referred to as background subtraction. The numerous
approaches differ in the type of background model used and procedure used to update the
model.
This paper discusses modeling each 4x4 pixel patch of an image through set of
coefficient vectors which are obtained by means of a discrete cosine transform. The
amount of vectors used to model a patch is adapted online for each patch separately. In
contrast to most other background removal techniques foreground detection and
background adaptation procedure also incorporates temporal and spatial characteristics of
an abject motion. The presented methods was shown to be very robust to arbitrary
changes in the observed environments and was successfully tested in several video
surveillance scenarios.
Moving objects detection in video streams is the first relevant step of information
extraction in many computer vision applications, including traffic monitoring, automated
remote video surveillance, people tracking, etc. And it is an important basis of later steps,
such as recognition, classification, and activity analysis. Although a lot of studies have
been proposed in recent years, the subject is still challenging. Moving object detection is
a very important step in video surveillance.
The proposed technique is automatic and efficient in intelligent surveillance
applications. The work can be further implemented to limit moving object speed. If a
vehicle is moving over its speed limit then it can be detected and tracked up to the
surveillance limit and store such tracked objects in order to reduce accidents in the traffic
surveillance.
