Prompt:

Think carefully about the issue presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.

Photographs are very much a part of our daily lives. They show us faraway places, things to buy, important
people and happenings, and sometimes just the ordinary. These pictures seem like frozen moments of real
life. Cameras do copy what is in front of the lens, and so, in that sense, photographs show us what is real. They
are at the same time, however, creations of the artist's intentions and unconscious mind.

Assignment: Are photographs straightforward representations of real life, or are they artistic creations reflecting the
photographer's point of view? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your
position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

Photographs are representation of real life but they are not always straightforward.
Most photographs are artistic creation that the photographer creates. Photographers what
you have a mood when you look at their photo weather that is happy, sad, relaxed,
depressing, energetic etc. they what you to feel what they felt when took the photograph.

Photographers are like artist they create picture, except artist draw, paint, or sculpt
their own picture photographers find their pictures in nature, lights, the sky, or anywhere you
look. Also artist try to create a mood or feeling in their artwork, same goes to photographers if
the photographer wants you to feel relaxed he will maybe take a picture of the beach with
calm waves in the background. If the mood he wants to create is fun and energetic maybe he
will take a picture of fireworks or a roller coaster in action. Photographers can also edit their
pictures, in that case the photographers has just turned into a artist because he can now draw
on the picture make it to weird shapes. So this means that yes they are artistic creation
reflecting a photographers point of view.

Now on the contrary photographers can be straightforward representations of real life.

For example if I took a picture of my TV because I wanted to sell. There is no artistic creation in
that photographer. So in this case photographs can be straightforward and plain.

In conclusion photographs can be artistic and straightforward. The pictures that you see
as wallpapers on your computer or cell phones are usually meant to inspire you or create a
mood, but the pictures you see in for example EBay or in daily life are usually just plain images
of what is happening at that time and place. Now I am not saying that photographers have to
be artistic (ex. they could just take a picture of a chair) and that everyday pictures you see are
always plain-jane (they could be artistic to). But my view is that most photographs are a
photographer’s artistic point of view so they can create mood and emotion.
