After two meetings, a state-appointed mediator decided they could not help the Natomas
Unified School District negotiate a contract with its classified employees.
The school district seeks an agreement with the union cutting 7.9 percent total
compensation for the 2011-12 school year. District officials says the cut is needed to
balance the budget and avoid bankruptcy. Classified union members rejected a proposed
contract earlier this year prompting the district to declare an impasse in negotiations with
which include school secretaries, custodians, bus drivers and others.
The school district, union and board will each appoint one person with labor negotiations
background to the panel. The panel will review information from both the school district
and union before rendering a decision whether pay cuts are warranted. The panel is
expected to convene in June.
Once the decision is rendered, the Natomas Unified school board could impose pay cuts on
the classified employees.
